Carnival Legend "suicide"
What's everyone's take on this? First report was suicide, now the spouse says that it was not a suicide. He either jumped/fell off his balcony after an argument with his wife about his bar tab that was overheard by neighbors.
Is she alleging that he was murdered? Or that he simply fell off the balcony? (that would be pretty difficult to do accidentally.) |
Not difficult to fall off the balcony if you are drunk, especially if you are sitting on the railing, or leaning over, and the ship is rolling.
I've seen 20-somethings sitting on the railings while the ship is docked. Can you just imagine the stupid games played while drunk and out at sea? |
There were actually 2 cases on 2 different Carnival Ships within a week, one on Inspiration was clearly a suicide.
This is what was printed: May 27 Carnival Legend Carnival Cruise Line A male passenger jumped overboard in front of his wife and two young sons, apparently during an argument over onboard spending, including gambling and alcohol. The ship was 650 miles offshore after leaving Tortola on its return to New York. A 12 search was undertaken without results. The May 28 cruise departed late because of an arrival that was 11 hour late. Overboard May 20 Inspiration Carnival Cruise Line An 82-year old man who was traveling by himself went missing and, based on a note found, is presumed to have committed suicide. Suicide |
Is the Overboard man died? How sad.
|
"A 12 search was undertaken without results"
Yes. |
WOW! So he jumped and his wife I suppose would watch where he went...and alert people. How do people dissapear so fast around a ships?
|
Is everybody enjoying Ziana's questions as much as I am?
|
I have wondered about Ziana for a long time. Is English a second language? If so, I'm impressed because I have NO second language. Or.........
|
What most people don't realize is if you jump/are thrown/go over board is that most likely you will be pulled under the ship. Then the props will chew you up. As a dumb teenage, a friend was sitting on the bow (FRONT) of a small motor boat. When they hit a wake she was tossed overboard. She did survive after 172 stitched along her legs where the engine prop hit her. She realized how lucky she was. Still get goose bumbs when I see anyone with feet over the bow!
|
My DH said that would be the perfect way to get rid of a spouse. Then later he said, "hey honey, for our 25th anniversary, Ive booked us a lovely balcony cabin aboard the s.s. minnow...."
Jes funnin, no disrespect intended!!! |
It sounded pretty pathetic: "I have wondered about Ziana for a long time".
Get a LIFE!!! English is my second language that I had learned from scratch at age of 28, happy now? Spur, so far ALL of my questions were answered by people, so keep enjoying until you will start to understand. |
bonnie,
it is scary what you just said. I never thought of it. So he must have died then... lightfoot, we were planning on this too but with rail going too inward it is not that easy. We couldn't even get rid of drunk person...lol |
Read in our morning paper that the family lives 5 min. from us. Wife already has an attorney so she's probably saying he didn't jump of his own free will.
|
So is she saying that someone came in & pushed him off the balcony while they were arguing, with their children in plain sight & all their neighbors listening?
Or did she get an attorney in case she is charged w/murder? This is very intriguing. |
Maybe she's getting an attorney because Carnival continued to serve him drinks when he was obviously already intoxicated????
|
Whatever it is, she hasn't lost any time. It's been just a few days.
|
I was actually on this cruise when it happened. I do believe the man jumped since he placed a chair under the railing of the balcony. He had lost all of his money in the casino. We spent 14 hours circiling the Atlantic going 2knots!
|
Casmith,
My husband & I were discussing how long it might take for the ship to be stopped & turned around. 14 hours must have included that time. That's an awful story. |
There is so much movement around the ships as they cruise along and most of these seem to happen at night...keep it in perspective, you think the Titanic was big ? It was only 46,328 tonnage, while the Carnival Legend is 88,500...The new Royal Caribbean monsters are 160,000 +...I'm sure they get rolled by waves and pulled under quickly, not to mention the fall, especially from a higher deck.
|
Wednesday,
Ships do roll, a matter of fact this was one of the most tuberlant cruises I have been one. Just so happens, the night the man did jump and take his own life, the ship was as smooth as a babys bottom. In addition, he placed a chair under the rail of the balcony and thre himself over. I would like to think that maybe he was being careless and the ship made a sudden movement and tossed him over but that was not the case. |
That's pretty sad, Casmith.
For both the family & the cruisers who were exposed to the entire drama. On our April cruise, a passenger who became very ill was taken off the ship at the first port. Then I heard that another died on board. I guess a cruise ship is like a slice of life, you get 2,000 odd people together & there are a lot of happenings. Hope your next cruise is better. |
These ships are getting bigger and bigger - the amount of people on them is the size of a small city - what are they doing about security ? Are there police on these ships ? A small city would definitely have a police force.
|
Unless Security is very low profile, I've never noticed any around. In fact, on our April cruise, we were in the casino, and I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair, hooked up to 3 oxygen tanks, with a tube in his nose, SMOKING. I asked a croupier to get security, and never did see anyone.
|
I actually saw quite a bit of security prior to the incident. We are going on th RCC in Decmeber to the Caribbean. I have a feeling it will be a better cruise but of course we are now very anxious about cruising!
|
My friend had her 15 y/old playing slots in casino with her...I was shocked that no one said nothing ever.
|
I would think the woman would waste no time seeking an attorneys help and input. If he had a policy most don't cover if it is ruled a suicide. She is covering her bases she needs to raise her kids! That is more than likely the reason. Sad.
|
Well, then, like I asked earlier, how did this happen? It was either a suicide or murder. You don't simply fall over a railing. It's too high.
|
Suerich,
It was clearly a suicide, he placed a chair under the railing of the balcony and jumped, his wife even admitted that. I believe she got a lawyer to try to sue Carnival saying that the bartender served him too much alcohol...and yes life insurance will not be paid on a suicide so she is tring to cover her husbands butt! |
Actually some insurance companies do cover suicide, however there is a 2 year time limit after the policy is purchased for the insurance to cover the event. I remember this specifically because our sales agent joked that we had to wait 2 years before we could do such a thing. Terrible subject.:( Anyways it is a sad tragedy and unfortunately the open water makes a rash decision easier to follow through with.
|
This is a very sad story.
However, as usual, most people do recover and try to pass the blame along and at the same time, make a few bucks. What has happened to our society? |
It is better to make few bucks then not to make a few bucks plus I think it helps to forget the pain...does it? ll these commotions - lawyers, courts, it should be keeping people pretty busy and help dealing with lost...am I totally unresonable?
|
No, you make a good point, Ziana -- finding someone to blame can take away some of the sense of powerlessness. (I think that's a major reason for lawsuits in general.) Obviously it's not a healthy way to deal with loss, but it IS a distraction. But you can only distract yourself for so long.
It's crazy how many "events" happen on cruise ships...guess it's just a numbers game! |
I read that the wife had be on him about his drinking and they had been arguing about this alot. However who really knows whay she feels or thinks? We may never find out. More importantly I think are the kids and their welfare. They witnessed this.
|
I am frustrated with the blame game. I wish people would take responsibility for their own actions. These are adults and I don't agree with suing everytime someone makes their own bad decision. I am of the opinion it is not the cruise line's responsibility to watch each and every passenger 24 hours a day. Some people make bad decisions and it is simply a tragedy and/or accident....if the man was on a plane and went into the restroom after a fight with his wife and hung himself, should the family sue the airline ? Thanks for the details casmith, very interesting...
|
Wednesday,
did you get info that she was suing cruiseline for sure? |
While I'm sure some are actually suicidal,I wonder how many of the people that jump off actually intend to kill themselves..I'd bet a few of them spontaniously went for the drama of jumping overboard, never even thinking about the fact that they would get sucked under the ship. Maybe they (incorrectly)assume the ship will just be able to stop on a dime and pick them up...too many movies make impossible stunts look possible!
|
I do not know if she is suing for sure, it was mentioned in a news article.
|
I'm just amazed that this thread is so long!
Why the curiosity? |
Someone's fishing :S-
|
JAGIRL, why are you asking?
It is not like people go cruising and falling over board every day. And BTW just for you - every post make thread LONGER...so why did you make this thread longer? I am so surprised at people. It is not travel issue...this thread is too long...you misspeled one word more then I did...is it safe to travel...to fdrink...to have kids...to live??? |
