Tough times
The shortage of power (especially in the Oriente) seems to be getting worse. Even if going to a resort you may want to confirm that they have their own generator and have access to fuel. Independent travel will be especially challenging right now. I know of a few different casa owners that are having problems securing fuel for their generators. Cuba's problems seem to be compounding and as much as I would like to help, I can't justify travelling there in its current state. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/18/w...-blackout.html

Tough times indeed! What a fcrazy mess. For travellers going there, cancellation insurance is a must these days.
For those brave enough to chance and challenge their sense of travel adventure, here is a list of bare necessities one would need;
flashlight(s)
power bank for phone
a good supply of non-spoilable food items
bug and thief repellent
candles(?)
hand-sanitizer
batteries(?)
first-aid kit

Our Cuba trips consist of a resort stay and usually a couple of nights in a nearby city. I hope there is some stability regarding these power outages or we’re not sure what we’ll do this winter. Our thoughts are with the Cuban people.

When things go sideways, you can always help by sending donations. I am not up to date on the struggles or situation in Cuba right now. But I started supporting the major food bank in Hawaiian islands instead of taking a trip there, back in the height of pandemic times. Stay home. Send money. Connect with local agencies for supplies as mentioned above. You do not need to bring them in person.

suze, that is a splendid idea although not something that I have done before. It sure beats travelling with too many suitcases and all that entails.
