Taxi cost from MB to Negril

Can anyone tell me what the cost is for the taxi from the airport to Negril (CCLP or Idle Awhile).I just checked on flight and hotel and it looks as though this trip is going to be cheaper than I expected. On expedia I found 5day/4 night stay and flight at CCLP for #1150 for 2 and IA for $1400 that is great.Anyways I appreciate any information on the cost of taxi's.Thanks,Christie

Hi Christie

we had AI organise us a taxi which cost $150 from Montego Bay to Negril. When we left AI we were going to Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios which is a lot further than Montego Bay. We used Clive’s Transport instead for only $80, Clive is the secretary of the Negril branch of JUTA so we figured he was on the level. Our driver was Avril, he was a wonderful driver and very informative, he even stopped to show us a cashew plant.

http://www.clivestransportservicejam...oduction_1.htm.

We used Clive (Avril was our driver again) when we left Jamaica Inn to Monteo Bay. Wonderful service.

You are so helpful..thank you! If we rent a car for a day..what are some close by must-do's?We would like to go to Treasure Beach and talk to some local folks for one thing but not sure what else to do.Is Dunn river falls close by?I guess I need to get a book about Jamaica. I normally always do when planning a vacation.

Hehe,

I'm the last person to ask, I had trips planned but my DH works such long hours that the minute he laid down on the AI loungers he was asleep. The only trip we did from Negril was parasailing we paid $30pp.

My best friend said we missed out by not visiting Dunns River but since we were staying at Jamaica Inn that resort has such a relaxing atmosphere we didn't do much from there either.

DH loved the vacation because it was so relaxing - we're taking our 16yr old son to Turks and Caicos because we need to spend time with our son and he wants a chill out beach location, so probably not much to report from there either

BTW, Kubaya will organise a car (free) to collect you from your hotel and take you back. You will need a taxi if you intend to visit a restaurant that's not on the beach otherwise you can walk up or down the beach, we felt very safe.

Try Country Country's restaurant they had a very good calamari. Totally recommended. I don't recommend Margaritaville I ordered Coconut shrimp and it came with packet mashed potatoes - YUK, YUK, YUK,

I agree. Clive is just great and his fees are very reasonable. He has another driver who works for him named Junior who is just a delight.

On the way down, I negotiated $50 directly with the taxi driver for Mo Bay to Negril. Just go outside the airport when you get there and go directly to the drivers. It may take a few minutes, but you will find someone to take you for $50 to $60.

Or, since Alya has thoughtfully provided you with the address, you can pre-arrange through Clive. Nice man. He apparently takes an active interest in the youth of the island and helps them with education and their jobs.

btw, I vote for Idle Awhile - we LOVED it.

Standard JUTA or private driver/van airport transfer rate for 1-4 passengers/luggage MoBay to Negril is US$60 + driver tip. You can higgle for less BUT make sure your driver is PPV insured/certified (he'll have papers).

Christie, I hope this trip works out for you--I know you've had your work cut out for you convincing your husband to give Jamaica a try.

I've not been to Negril, but it's my understanding that it's in the neighborhood of a 90 minute drive to Treasure Beach. If you wanted to do a daytrip there, I'd recommend the Black River trip. There will be folks who can organize a trip for you out of Negril, but if you can find contact info for Dennis in Treasure Beach, you will have much more to experience.

I think Liza or Tiverton will have his cell phone number.

But he leaves from Treasure Beach on his small fishing boat--seats up to 6 folks. Between TB and the Black River hs idles the boat for awhile when he sees the dolphins so that you can watch them play. Some come right up to the boat--you'd swear you could almost touch them. Others stay off in the near distance, frolicking and gamboling in the water. It's a wonderful thing to witness.

He then proceeds up the Black River and you get to see some crocodiles. But the good thing about his boat is that it's small enough to float under a bridge that is too low for the larger pontoon boats organized by the resorts and cruise ships. After that, it's peace on the river, stopping by at a wide spot in the river--there's a rickety dock, a rope swing, and a man with a cooler selling Red Stripe. Wonderful swimming at that point and the water is so clear.

From there, Dennis calls in your lunch order so that it's fresh & waiting for you when you get back to the town of Black River--we had the fresh fish which was good, but the chicken looked even better. I'm not crazy about having to pick out all of the bones in my fish--it was prepared whole. But what I didn't finish off, the neighborhood cats were more than willing to devour.

From there we went to the Pelican Bar--a little piece of paradise built out on a sandbar about 1/2 mile off shore. It sells Red Stripe, sodas, Ting, and I even saw a solar operated blender. We stayed there about an hour, just chilling.

Then back to Treasure Beach. It would make a very long day coming from Negril, admittedly. With only 5 days in Negril, you might not want to tear yourself away from that beach.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. The South coast highlight tour with Clive sounds great..maybe we will try that.Sounds like the same trip that you did EJ but with a different tour guide.I normally like to explore own my own but being that Jamaica is such a large island..I would rather do a tour the first trip. We will then just relax the rest of this trip.

ej:
Now my DH is very excited about the trip.

I am also hoping to get some ready to eat lobsters on the beach from the vendor that everyone has talked about.

alya:
Hope that you have a wonderful trip with your son to T&C.

Alya, For some reason I can't use the URL you gave. I went to Clive's web site and it won't send either. I would really like to have him transport our family at
Christmas. Thanks for any help you can give me. Owa

I wouldn't rent a car.Driving in Jamaica is crazy & taxis are usually cheap. Many of the local restaurants will pick you up & drop you off at your hotel for free. I wanted to go to Norm's but we didn't have time. He does the pickup thing.

Have a great time.

Arrrrrgh

I realized (while replacing the shingles on my house today – isn’t it funny how your mind can wander?) That I‘d posted incorrect information.

AI quoted $150 to take us from Negril to Ocho Rios, Clive quoted (and we paid) $80.

Phew! That feels better.

OWA try googling Clives transport Jamaica

Alternatively call 011 876 956 2615 – home

Or 011 876 373 6004

If you have trouble getting thru to Clive, try CAROLYN BARRETT at
barrettadventures.com (carolynb@barrettadventures is e-mail)for both airport transfers and also
touring ops, including the South Coast/
Black River,Pelican Bar, YS Falls,etc.
Dennis Abrahams, Lennie Parchment and Joh, Capn Joseph Brown -- there are lots of good boatmen in TB but you'll want to leave from Black River or Parrottee for Pelican Bar/a short 10 min.offshore and about 30 min.closer to you than Treasure Beach.

The cost is $20 per person on a group bus or $60 if you want the bus to yourselves. For the past few years I've used Kenny tours they are reliable and the buses are nice and clean he has a web site @ www.kennytours.com I might add that my wife and me always go private for the $60 that way theres no waiting for other passengers to arrive. thats $60 total not per person.
