My wife and I, in our seventies, will arrive in Basseterre, St. Kitts, on a cruise and be on the island from 10 AM to 5 PM, February 21st. We haven't been there before and would like to hire a personal tour guide to take us on a private sightseeing tour of the island. Must be in a nice air-conditioned car. any suggestions?

Coming in by ship will be different than if you were there for a week or so. When you get off the boat, there will be taxi drivers lined up as you come off the pier. They do 98% of the tours anyway. They are all good and honest. The price is set by the government and posted in the St. Kitts Visitor magazine. Look for a good clean van, confirm the price and your all set. If you insist on a personal driver, I can set it up for you. Contact me direct if you wish.

My husband and I are arriving in Nov. 2010. We would like to have a personal driver to spend the day with us. Any advice?

Although the above response was posted over 8 years ago the advice given by "Bill" is still accurate. There will be scores of very capable taxi driver/guides at the cruise ship dock or the airport (you didn't say how you were arriving on island). All the drivers are required to be licensed by the government and they must have passed a detailed test in ordered to become an official guide. If, by chance you are staying at a hotel, you'll find plenty of taxi driver/guides waiting at the front entrance or you can always ask the Desk Clerk to hail a cab for you.

It's really unfair to single out one or two drivers as there are so many wonderful "ambassadores of the island" waiting to serve the tourists. They are all very, very good.
