I haven't stayed there myself, but I know there are a number of threads comparing the Westin & Caneel Bay on this board. Search Westin St. John in the search box at the top of the screen to find and read those threads. As I understand it, for the money Caneel Bay wins, hands down.

I stayed there in January using Starwood Points and was very happy. It's an attractive, very nicely landscaped property.
Very family (kid) friendly - with lots of activities, nice pool, etc.
Concierge was great - excellent dinner recommendations and reservations.
Rooms are fine. We stayed in one of the garden view buildings which had a nice view of the bay, but was a little bit of an uphill walk from the pool/beach area.
We did not eat there other than snacks at the pool bar one night because there are so many great restaurants in Cruz Bay.
The beach, as has been well-documented, is not up to par with the others on the island. It looks and feels like a sailboat harbor.
We rented a jeep for the entire week and explored the island and the many great beaches everyday (including those at Caneel). This was one of our most memorable vacations.
Bottom line: if you don't want to leave the resort, Caneel is a much better choice. If you want to rent a car and explore, the Westin is a fine option.

PS, Tennis was free, which is very nice compared to many resorts.
