Rick's Cafe
We're looking for a place to meet up with some friends - all of us Negril first timers. I've heard a little about Rick's. We're staying at Beaches Sandy Bay and RIU. Is Rick's close by? When is the best time to go and what do they have to offer ie. food, drink, entertainment?

also...

How far can you walk on the beach in Negril with out encountering major obsticals?

I'm not trying to be flip, but a map would really help you visualize what I will describe.
The northernmost part of Long Bay (Negril's 7-mile beach) ends in a point and the resorts of Grand Lido, Hedo II and Point Village occupy that point. Around the point further north on Bloody Bay is RIU. Beaches is a bit south of the point but still at the north end of Long Bay.

Now, Rick's Cafe is on the "cliffs" which is further down the coast beyond Negril village. So from RIU, there's 7 miles of beach to the village, then another 1-2 miles before you reach Rick's.

So...depends on what you consider close by. Certainly an easy taxi ride, but definitely not a walking destination.

The most popular time for Rick's is sunset. There will be people (including you if you wish) diving from the cliffs there. It's been far too many years since my last visit to remember their menu selections, but they have a full bar and meals range from casual to full dinner. When I was last there, I thought the food was good, but significantly overpriced. Rick's has been a fixture in Negril for years...anyone will be able to help you reach this spot.

Suggest
You give good advice. We were in Negril last June and went over to Ricks for the sunset and watch the crazies jump off the cliffs. The tokens you have to buy show a face value of $1 but cost as I recall $1.50...and you have to have them to buy a beer. We did not eat but I did read the menu and I agree that the prices seemed on the high side. It is a nice place, and the food looked good that was being served. If you are in Negril go to Ricks at least once. But, do not plan on walking there from the main beach area...too far. Your hotel/resort can arrange a taxi or perhaps they will offer a group rate in a minibus that will wait and bring you back. It is fun and worth a visit.

Rick's is definitely overpriced and the drink token thing is a real pain. However, if enjoying a sunset with a couple hundred other tourists lined up along the cliff is your idea of fun, go ahead.

There are about 4 miles of cliffs and that entire length is lined with restaurants and bars that offer the exact same sunset view, usually with a lot more charm and no crowds. I like 3 Dives the best, then Xtabi, Rockhouse, Pirate's Cove, LTU Pub.

However, if you want to see the cliff divers, Rick's is the main place to do that.
