St. Kitts or St. Thomas
My fiance and I are really wanting to go to the carribbean for our honeymoon in September (9.27-10.4). Neither of us has ever been before. After doing some preliminary research, we've kind of narrowed it down to St. Kitts or St. Thomas.
My question is, which of these islands do you think would be best for a honeymoon spot for a couple new to the carribbean and why.
Thanks in advance,
Jennie

Jennie: First of all St. Kitts and St. Thomas are like night and day. What made you narrow it down to these two? And in September you are in the middle of hurricane season, and many of the hotels and restaurants close during this month.
You may want to rethink.

You really have to tell us what you and your fiance want in a Caribbean honeymoon in order for us to make reasonable suggestions. As the Sabine said St. Kitts and St. Thomas are as different as night and day. Also, you are planning to go in the peak of hurricane season and while there's no way to predict if a storm will be brewing that exact week it is a possibility. You may want to look at some of the islands from St. Vincent and south which are less likely to be affected by storms.

Well, we wre told that hurrican season in the caribbean is a little like tornado season in OK (where we live). It's not that there's a hurrican every DAY, but it's more like the conditions are better for them to form at that time of year. We certainly thought we could handle that.
As for why we chose those two places . . . mostly it was because those are the two places that got the most raves in various conversations with people we talked to who'd been to the caribbean.
We're looking for things to do like hiking, snorkling . . . things like that, as well as just laying around, basking in the sun! We don't need nightlife . . . just good restaurants.

I have been involved with SK for 14 years and everything your looking for is in St. Kitts. The one big difference is we are not so commercialized as St Thomas or the other islands. The history, the resorts and the people are so friendly. The beachs in SK are very nice with resorts such as The Marriott, The Papillion, Island Paradise and The Sea Lofts on the Atlantic side. On the calm Caribbean side is Timothy Beach Resort (the only resort directly on the beach) and Frigate Bay Resort. I don't know what you mean by a "honeymoon spot" but you make that on your own.

Your comparison of hurrican season and tornado season is a good one. No way to predict but you know they can happen.
St. Thomas offers a large variety of resorts and beaches, excellent shopping, places to hike, very good to excellent snorkling, lots of watersports, plenty of beach bars, all type of restaurants from your fast food chains to local dining favorites, exciting night life and lots of crowds (and all that implies), especially when the cruise ships are in port. Going at the end of September and beginning of October will lessen the number of tourists to a more tolerable level. This is an ideal island if you are looking for a place with lots of thing to do and see, you don't mind being with lots of other people and you want something more Americanized.
St. Kitts is much more laid back and less populated. The new Marriott (300+ rooms) is the largest on the island with the rest of the hotels being much smaller. You find rain forests and volcanos to hike, a few nice shops in town but no where near the number of places in St. Thomas, the beaches are nice but they have dark sand and don't compare to the ones on St. Thomas. The snorkling is limited and average even at the best sites. There are a several excellents restaurants and quite a few other very good ones. Night life pales when compared to St. Thomas but the Marriott does have a casino if you like that sort of action. Pick St. Kitts if your idea of a perfect vacation is someplace quiet and reserved, with friendly people and an old time West Indies athmosphere.

I hate to contradict what you've been told by people who have visited the Caribbean buy in my (humble) opinion you should do some research on Anguilla as a honeymoon destination. It is a small friendly island with AMAZING beaches and AWESOME restaurants (the best in the caribbean). If your idea of a honeymoon is to chill out on a gorgeous beach with no crowds Anguilla would be ideal.

Jennie: I am intrigued about how you came up with these two islands. They are worlds apart as far as personality. Maybe we could help you more if we knew what you were looking for. There are probably islands that are a happy medium.
