We are planning a mid-October Honeymoon (Oct. 18) We are undecided where to go and are considering St. Thomas and Aruba. We are concerned about hurricanes. Can anyone give us some suggestions? Thank you!

Have you considered Bermuda? Although not "safe"
from hurricanes in October, alot less likely to get hit from one than St. Thomas. St. Thomas still has not recovered from its last hurricane - certainly couldn't recommend it for a honeymoon. On the other hand, Bermuda is a paradise and in October, the weather will still be good enough for the beach.

That time of the year can be very rough. Have you thought of Cancun as a possible destination? When I was there during the month of October it rained about one half hour each afternoon but not enough to have to change our plans. I lived in St.Croix (U.S.V.I.) and saw so many couples on their Honeymoon, where it rained all week in October. Best Wishes!

We were in Little Cayman during September which is hurricane season. Due to where the Caymans are located they get one Hurricane in a century ( they've had it!). We are PADI divers. We stayed at The Southern Cross Resort. I highly recommend it. The property has 8 bungalows that are scattered under the palm trees on the beach. All have been renovated recently as has the whole property. You have your own porch and hammock on the beach. The resort has exquiste gourmet cooking,a pool, a bar, clubhouse and a view to die for. There is some of the BEST diving in the World off the "WALL". You can learn to dive there. There is a mini Island you can see from the resort beach a private picknic can be arranged. The sports facilities include sailing,Khaiking, World Class Tarpon Fishing,Bird Watching, diving and snorkeling. They have bikes you can ride around the island. This is a quiet place to loose yourself in each other. There are about 4 other resorts on the Island you can visit thier bar or dine at. Check out Fordors Guide.

I know exactly where you are comming from. We had planned our mid-October 1995 honeymoon for Caneel Bay on St. John. As you probably know, a hurricaine forced us to change at the last minute. We ended up going to Barbados (stayed at Royal Pavilion) and had a great time! The island is too far southeast to be concerned with tropical storms and huricaines (hasn't had one in over 100 years I'm told). The weather is good. Chances are you will see about one thunderstorm a day but they should all be short lived. Barbados is a wonderful place to honeymoon if you are willing to forego the "made to order" honeymoon packages which are more common in the northern carribean destinations. You mentioned Aruba. It is completely out of the hurricane belt-NEVER gets hurricanes so you would be safe no matter what. It is a little further south than anything else mentioned and maybe a little more expensive but definitely worth it. It is not as lush as other islands - has some desert areas. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Palm Beach which is gorgeous. Aruba has some of the best windsurfing in the world if you are interested in that. Can take horseback ride thru the interior in a big national park-that is a great trip. Kind of windy on the beach, but that's why the windsurfing is so good. Gambling is legal in Aruba so most big hotels have casinos. Everyone speaks English and you probably won't have to exchange money since almost everyone accepts US dollars or plastic (VISA, MasterCard, etc.)

Have you considered changing directions and going to Hawaii? Hurricanes are a rare occurence and the weather is terrific in October. I would rent a private home (cheaper than a resort and a lot more private). I have several recommendations for homes - have stayed in all of them.
