Hyatt vs. Westin--Going Crazy!!

Hi i am going to the cayman islands next week. Unfortunately the Westin is booked for the week that i am traveling. Will i be disappointed with the hyatt. I have been hearing a lot of negativity towards the hyatt. Are these extreme opinions or will i not be too impressed with the hotel? Please reply
You may feel the need to dress up alot if you're at the Hyatt. Not necessarily dressy-dressy every minute but more "spiffed" and tailored than elsewhere on the island. Partly because it's not on the beach, and has a more formal feel and partly because of the other guests, most of whom seem the high maintenance type. A lot of business people apparently stay there too. If you are that type person, you will love the Hyatt. If you want to be more laid back you would probably be happier somewhere else. Formality is great if that's what you're wanting. Personally, I think Cayman is much too HOT to dress up any more than is absolutely necessary.

This is not to say that there aren't people in tees and slip on shorts roaming about the property. But they do seem out of place. Dockers and polo shirts are more in keeping with the stylishness of the Hyatt.

There are many condos on the SMB strip, rentals at Rum Point, an inn in Boddentown & villas at Cayman Kai & Morritts Tortuga (not close to anything). Treasure Island Resort Hotel has probably started some reconstruction by now so I'd not recommend them. Unless you feel you MUST stay in a hotel, there is alot to choose from & a big variance in price.

The Hyatt is not a BAD choice, it's just not the best one IMHO. And about the golf carts escorting you about. There's no guarantee one will be there when you need it.

I disagree with notafan. We recently visited Hyatt GC (with 2 little kids) and had a great, relaxed time. Yes a little pricey and yes lots of businesspeople/convention-types, but the hotel was beautiful and the service and people were great. We trooped around in bathing suits and flip-flops and felt fine. If you're not real close to the beach you'll probably use the shuttles, which just require a few minutes' notices. Bottom line: Hyatt GC is pricey but very nice. We'd go back anytime (though did not visit the Westin).
Unless you have shuttled or walked to the beach, you won't know the Hyatt Grand Cayman from any other upscale, sedate resort in a tropical locale. If you don't care so much about the beach and water you will be happy. It is a place for golfers, business people and honeymooners who don't come out of their rooms. If you fit into one of those categories and don't mind a big American Express bill, you will be happy there. But you will definitely want to dress up if you want to fit in, regardless of what some may say.

On the other hand, their blue canvas hooded beach chairs are very pretty and the sand has been smashed to a powder, probably on purpose during construction. If the distance to the beach is okay with you and you don't mind crowds (the cruise ship passengers often hang out nearby) the beach area is very nice.

Have you checked out the Marriott on Grand Cayman? It is on the beach, and is very nice, although not as nice as the Westin, that would be my second choice. The Hyatt is not on the beach, and if that is important to you, think about it. We found the Marriott very accomodating, and had a great time. Don't sweat it too much, just have a good time, you're going to Cayman!!
