Honeymoon in Culebra or Vieques, P.R.?
I am planning my honeymoon for June of 1998 and I am
wondering which island off of the coast of Puerto
Rico I should visit. I have receive a lot of information
on both islands, but Vieques seems to have nicer
accomodations. Please offer any advice! Thanks, Anne

Anne, I wouldn't recommend staying on Vieques, unless you have a specific reason for going there. My husband and Ivisited a couple years ago to see the bioluminescent bay, which is a shallow lagoon filled with dinoflagellates that emit a phosphorescent glow when disturbed. You can get a tour there at night and go swimming, and your body will glow underwater like a neon sign. Other than that neat experience, I wasn't impressed with much else on Vieques. There are a few nice beaches, like Moon and Sun bays, but the island was very dirty, dominated by U.S. navy base bombing ranges, and is well-known for drug running.

I, too, am wondering about Vieques and am finding no comfort from the different travel books. I have heard good things about Vieques certainly none that sound like the warning from the one person that it is nothing more than a dirty drug running army base. Hopefully that's changed in the last year or so...if not, please advise before July!

We stayed at Casa De Francais on Vieques about three years ago. The island is quite undeveloped and you must have a romatic eye and a taste for adventure in order to enjoy. Not much to do but beach stuff....lot's of trouble with theft of personal belongings while swimming etc. Casa is a neat place if you like to hang out, read or sun....

Our family just returned from Vieques this past weekend. We had a wonderful time. Stayed at the Crow's Nest on the middle of the island. Nice relaxing place. Another, Casa del Frances, seemed like it would be great for a honeymoon.
Don't count on nightlife other than the bars. The snorkeling and beaches were uncrowded and beautiful!
