Cathy, I got lots of info so here goes-
Dress Code- very casual. Shorts, tee shirts, don't really need slacks unless you want to get dressed up some night. I typically take shorts, a couple of golf shirts, teees and swim suits. Also take plenty of sun block, the sun is intense.
My son and I do an annual dive trip to Coz and stay at the Fiesta Inn which is closer to town.
There probably is some good snorkeling right off the beach. If not go to Chakanasp) State Park - highly rated. I don't have any knowledge of bonefishing in Coz. The marlin and sailfishing is excellent between Coz and the mainland and the hotel can help you set that up.
The restaurants in Coz are wonderful. Prima, Th eLobster House, La Chosa,Ernesto's Fajita Factory, La Maison, lots more. I've heard the restaurants in El Presidente are pretty good but have not tried them.
Some evening you must go to CarlosN'Charlies in San Miguel.
Cozumel is very laid back and very safe, the locals are very friendly and recognize tourists as livelyhood. There is a Fiesta every sunday nite at the square in San Miguel.
Enjoy, Bart
Cathy,
I don't have a lot of info on Cozumel, but did spend one day there. My friends and I were staying in Playa del Caremen, a short ferry ride from Cozumel. Cozumel does have some awesome snorkeling and diving spots but the beaches are quite rocky. Much nicer in Playa del Carmen. Playa also has a lot more to do- restaurants, nightlife, tours, etc. If you are not locked into staying in Cozumel, I would be more than happy to give you the low down on Playa del Carmen. We had the most fabulous time, and were so glad we only devoted one day to Cozumel (kind of boring in comparison.) -Stacy
p.s. The dress code is casual/beach attire wherever you go in Cozumel or Playa.
We stayed at the Presidente last spring and loved it.
The snorkeling at the hotel is terrific - they leave a basket of bread for the fish, so people are feeding them constantly and it attracts quite a bit. In addition, there is a sunken barge right off the beach that always has all kinds of reef dwellers.
The hotel provides you with coffee free to your room each morning, which is nice. The rooms in the 5400 block open right onto the beach. Dress is casual. The food is good, but so are all of the above mentioned restaurants. The mexican fiesta nite at the hotel was super with a big mariachi band for entertainment. You can take a cab to playa Corona for a different snorkel. It's pretty there to, but there are no facilities there. Chankanab used to be nice, but it gets too filled with cruise ship passengers. If you go, pick a time when the ships are not in port, early in the am would be wise. The cab ride into town is about $5 US and takes only about 5 - 7 minutes.
Have a good trip!!

I spent a week in Cosumel last January. The snorkeling in the Carribean is the best-most clear and calm water. If you like the Mayan ruins thing there is a one day trip on a small plane that takes you to Chitchinitza (sp?) which is very impressive. We stayed at the Fiesta Americana Cozumel Reef. Rented a jeep one day and went to the other side of the island. Quieter and pretty in a different way. Took a ferry over to Playa del carmen one day to Xcaret which has a really neat underground river, and beach area and turtles, dolphins that you can swin with for a high price. I enjoyed Cozumel very much.
