You got it, JAGIRL! Come to think of it, I've met a lot of sailors in the BVI with similar wicked thoughts...

JAGIRL Aug 3rd, 2006 09:26 AM

O.k. so let's see...why not a little adventure?

In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
In 1493 Columbus named this island
green

Once a refuge for persecuted Irish Catholics and a place for Irish political prisoners, this island has quite a shaky...yet distinct Irish heritage.

Well, I know of Montserrat's Irish heritage...but I didn't know that other stuff about it. I love this thread!

JAGIRL Aug 3rd, 2006 10:18 AM

I find this thread quite interesting too ej ;) Portions of it take me back to High school history :D

Where we gonna go next kids?

ejcrowe Aug 3rd, 2006 10:36 AM

You must have a good memory for history, JAGirl. I've only become obsessed with the region since 2001 and done my reading since then. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to recall those details if I had learned them as a teen!

Speaking of history...what island was the first to recognize the fledgling republic of the US as a country during the American Revolution?

jacketwatch Aug 3rd, 2006 10:44 AM

Haiti?

ejcrowe Aug 3rd, 2006 11:02 AM

Try again. It's the home of a frequent poster here at Fodor's.

seasweetie Aug 3rd, 2006 11:15 AM

Would that be Statia (St. Eustatius)?

ejcrowe, I just read Pat McCarthy's last book and he delved into the Irish origins in a trip he took to Montserrat - it was great - you should take a look, if you like such things..

ejcrowe Aug 3rd, 2006 11:25 AM

you are quite correct! I'm not familiar with Pat McCarthy. what books has s/he written, and what was the title of the one dealing with Montserrat?

And where will you take us next?

JAGIRL Aug 3rd, 2006 11:49 AM

I would have guessed Haiti too! :) So much for history! :))

I'm actually not that far from my high school days ej ;)

Plus at University I had friends from all over the Caribbean and "history lessons" were quite regular events with us! :D
We were always trying to decide which island was the best! :))

seasweetie Aug 3rd, 2006 12:09 PM

OK, what small charming Caribbean island has as it's national bird the wedgrego?

JAGIRL Aug 3rd, 2006 12:14 PM

What on earth is a wedgrego?

JAGIRL Aug 3rd, 2006 12:21 PM

ooh I know what a wedrego is now! :D
See you learn something new everyday! ;)

I cheated though so I can't answer this one. :))

seasweetie Aug 3rd, 2006 12:45 PM

Oops, I spelled it wrong - yes, wedrego, thanks JAGIRL -

I'm a fount of useless trivial knowledge...

tivertonhouse Aug 4th, 2006 05:23 AM

Saba.

seasweetie Aug 4th, 2006 06:13 AM

You're right, tivertonhouse! And now it's your turn to take us travelling....

tivertonhouse Aug 4th, 2006 10:47 AM

Part of a country economically supportive of others in the region but no 'friend' to the present US administration , this national park island is one Jean-Paul Sartre, who once said 'Hell is other people', would have loved. To get there, take a plane to the mainland, another short plane (or yacht)ride offshore, settle in to
your pousada -- and then a 30 min.boat ride to reach this pristine beach island, one of many similar in the
area.

JAGIRL Aug 4th, 2006 06:12 PM

Good one Tiv,
Isla Margarita is the best I can come up with for this one.

tivertonhouse Aug 5th, 2006 12:39 AM

JA GIRL: You're on the right track,
but not there yet....

jacketwatch Aug 5th, 2006 04:24 AM

Isla de diablo? :-)
