I am so jealous! I love Willie Ts!

brenandg Jul 25th, 2006 04:11 PM

Just an FYI I read elsewhere that due to licensing issues, jumping will no longer be allowed at the Willy T. No, I not making a joke. It says the "box" is now gone and although people may still take it upon themselves to try to jump, there will be no more T-shirts from the Willy T to condone it. Apparently there was a near drowning recently.

anonxx,
You get to chose the next destination...if you do not respond soon...someone else can choose.

Okay, it's been 3 days, so I will bite! Since we are still in the BVI's, lets get a cooler of food and a cooler of booze, our snorkel gear and hang out at Sandy Cay for the day.

My question:
Which islands are sometimes referred to as the "Spanish Virgin Islands"?

ejcrowe Jul 27th, 2006 01:06 PM

Why, that would be Culebra and Vieques. And possibly the tiny little uninhabited island off the coast of PR whose name eludes me...

And while we're lingering in the area, what was the intended original European name for Puerto Rico? Due to a cartographical error, the island became known as Puerto Rico instead.

JAGIRL Jul 29th, 2006 07:23 AM

ej,
If my high school history serves me well, I believe the island was originally named after John the Baptist - San Juan Bautista.

Sometime in the 1500's the Spanish occupiers started settling along a part of the northern shore in an area of a natural bay. That settlement was named Porto/Peurto Rico - rich port.

The names eventually got switched inadvertently and San Juan became the capital and Puerto Rico became the name of the island.

You're absolutely right! Where will you take us now?

christiegr Jul 30th, 2006 02:47 PM

Well Brett...this thread would be fun if we could get it going.

o.k. o.k. I'm sorry I forgot to post some trivia.
Let's linger a while shall we?

What is the fourth largest Caribbean island?

tivertonhouse Jul 31st, 2006 01:03 AM

1.Cuba
2.Hispaniola
3.Jamaica
4. PUERTO RICO --- and staying right there, what 'sheepish' hotel would you
head to for off-the-beaten track luxury?

ejcrowe Jul 31st, 2006 06:14 AM

Well, I for one would head over to the Horned Dorset Primavera near Rincon for some R&R. That place looks fab! Have you been there, Tiv?

tivertonhouse Jul 31st, 2006 12:47 PM

Yessssss, m'am. Have -- before they put the new villas in. All yours, ejcrowe.
Roll wid it, gyal...

tivertonhouse Jul 31st, 2006 12:55 PM

And would most definitely go again since the new villas and its PR may/may not have changed it and who goes there now. But the area's also great, small family fish restaurants, funky, laid-back ,lots of surf around Dec-Jan, with HDP a quirky and idiosyncratic luxe oasis -- the kind of place which even when full you still never see much of anyone around except at dinner.

ejcrowe Jul 31st, 2006 12:55 PM

Hmmm. On what island(s) can you find the living descendants of the Carib indians, for whom the region is named?

ejcrowe Jul 31st, 2006 12:57 PM

ahh, we just cross posted. Sounds like a nifty place. With a heavy pricetag, though. But the Rincon area looks pretty groovy to me.

tivertonhouse Jul 31st, 2006 01:30 PM

Let's go for the two-fer: DOMINICA
is where the last of the Caribs live.
HDP not a cheapo, but even worth it for a long 4 day weekend or midweek.

The NEXT question: What island was, best known for its exports of soft
pink sand and strong black men?

tivertonhouse Jul 31st, 2006 01:59 PM

Ah, a trick question -- just noticed the island(s). Dominica is main group; there's also a scattering of ethnic and 'mixed ethnic' Caribs in Trinidad,
St.Vincent, Saint Lucia and the islands/coast of Honduras (where they've intermarried with former Jamaicans and are called Garifuna)
