Vegetarian Restaurant

Can anyone suggest a favorite restaurant, preferably vegetarian or with lots of veggie options,in the area between/around the Berri-UQAM Metro and the Contemporary Art Museum?

If you want something different, try Le Commensal. This is a small chain of upscale vege cafeterias with a very varied selection of hot foods, salads and desserts, beers and wines. Lots of fun, even for non-vegetarians. There is one on St Catherine downtown by the University, and one on St. Denis just below Sherbrooke.

Hi Italyagain,

I searched www.restomontreal.ca and besides zootsi's good suggestion is Végé-Déli at 845 Ste-Catherine Est, which should be a block east of the Berri-UQAM Metro stop.

I second zootsi's recommendation for Le Commensal - ate there this past summer - lots and lots of food to choose from, cafeteria style, very clean and well-run, beautiful interior, nice selections, a fun experience. Desserts were good too.

As an alternative, La Popessa on st. denis lets you pick the toppings and sauces for your custom pasta dish so you could have as many veggies as you want over pasta, they stir fry them then make your dish.

Some of my favourites include:

Chu Chai or its BYOB buffet sister Chuch: on rue Saint-Denis a few blocks north of Sherbrooke (between Duluth & Rachel).

Thai food, everything's vegetarian and creative. The mock duck tastes unbelievably like duck it's something else.

Worth going out of your way is Aux Vivres. Just reopened last week after renovations. (You'd have to take the 55 bus north past Mont-Royal Avenue or go to Mont-Royal Metro.) It's vegan, innovative and IMO unbelievably delicious AND nutritious. Definitely free-spirited staff (it's a kind of cooperative) that blend in well with the restaurant's philosophy. Their tofu scrapple brunch is out of this world.

In addition to the Quebec chain le Commensal (that I just went to today), in your area (around Berri-UQAM), there's a place called Spirite Lounge where they have one dish. They have a menu fixe and apparently if you don't finish your meal, you pay extra... they're very anti-waste and non-corporate. I've heard it's good though...must try it and tell you.

Cheers, DAN
