Toronto Cheap Eats

Travellers to Toronto are presented with bewildering array of dining options.

Of course, at places like Rain or Auberge d'Pommier, it's easy to spend over $100 per plate plus plus wine.

At the other end of the scale, there are many economical places to eat out that would cost about the same as home cooked meal - which is why I rarely eat at home.

What are your favourite Toronto Cheap Eats?

I can vouch for the following places -
some which require a car but you get to visit some of my favourite areas in Toronto such as the Chinese restaurant area on Highway 7 (Best chineese food in North America in my humble opinion) and Bayview Avenue in Leaside.

1) Whole Foods prepared meals - 87 Avenue Road in Yorkville Area. You can get a good lunch for $8 and eat on the premises - all organic food too.
TTC stations Bay and Museum.

2) Mr. Greek (568 Danforth Ave) - 3 souvlaki sticks, a greek salad, rice and a pint of Stella Artois is about $17. (TTC - Bloor eastbound subway to Pape station - walk three blocks west).

3) Cafe Diplomatico (Italian - 594 College St) - Pasta and Veal special plus soup and a pint of Stella - around $20. (College west bus or streetcar once the track construction is finished).

4) Lick's Hamburgers (the best) $10 for a cheesburger, fries and a drink. TTC friendly locations are 1960 Queen Street East (Eastbound streetcar on Queen to the Beaches) and 49 Eglington East (subway to Eglington station).

5) Fish and Chips - Old York Fish and Chips 96 Laird Dr Toronto - About $14 for a pint with one fish unit and chips. (TTC: Bus 88 (Leaside) from St. Clair station.)

6) Dim Tai Fun = First Markham Place (Woodbine and Highway Seven area) Shanghai Dim Sum plus soup noodle for about $15.
(Bus - Markham Route 1 from TTC Finch station)

7) Sushi dinner - Fukui Sushi. 1612
Bayview $18 (TTC bus 11 (Bayview) from Davisville Station)

8) Gelato - 1640 Bayview Ave $3.50 for a cup of three flavours.
(TTC bus 11 from Davisville Station)

Fish & Chips in the other direction: Kingsway Fish & Chips, one block west of Royal York subway station,. on Bloor Street West.

Walk-around pizza; Amato in the old chicken market building on queen Street West, just west of McCaul and across the street from the City TV parking lot. More than a dozen choices of pizza slices, $3.25 and $3.95 for a big slice.

Hot dog and fries for around $3.50 from the trucks in front of City Hall and the Toronto Convention Centre.

If you are interested, there is a book called "Cheapeats Toronto" (as well as Cheapeats Ottawa) that has tons of cheap and good restaurants. I see it's available on chapters.ca

Good list Hog.
Heres a couple more :

1. East Indian food : Uduppi Palace on north side of Gerrard street just East of Coxwell, for great selection of Masala Dosa (south Indian cuisine). Less than $10.00 pp

2. Kama Kama restaurant. King Street west opposite Roy Thompson Hall. Very good and large lunchtime buffet $10.99 pp

3.The chinese food stall on the lower level of the St. Lawrence market. Your choice of any 2 items for $5.00, 3 for $5.75 taxes included and the servings are good.

Agree with BAK on Amato's - great slices.
Also, lunch buffets at Indian restaurants for around $8-$10 - Babur and Taste of India are two good ones.
And the Cafe Crepe on Queen St. West, good crepes and exceptional coffee.

1) Salad King for Thai food (east of Yonge, a little north of Dundas)

2) Spring Rolls (several locations downtown), for groups who can't decide which type of Asian food they want to eat.

3) Pho Hung (I like the Bloor Street location, up on the 2nd floor overlooking the street - a great respite from shopping in upscale Yorkville, but there's another location on Spadina).

4) Kalendar on College St (romantic space, affordable prices for simple meals).

5) Young Thailand (the one near Adelaide and Church is best).
