SARS in Vancouver?

Read on the web today that SARS had been reported in Vancouver. Can anyone comment? I assume that because of the large Asian presence in Vancouver, and it's west coast orientation, that Vancouver might stand a substantial risk from travelers bringing it in from Asia.

Comments?

I think the stat is that 10,000 people from Vancouver travel to Hong Kong monthly... and due to Vancouver's airport being the main hub to other Asian cities, it would only be a matter of time before Vancouver would come into contact with SARS. Kind of scary if you ask me, considering I live nearby the airport in a city where the majority of the population travels to Hong Kong on a regular basis.

At this point in time the SARS panic is out of all proportion to reality. The fact is that in all the world there is less than 2,000 cases and in Canada 100, (including 'presumed' cases), with about 20 in BC. On a comparitive basis the common flu is many times more deadly and more contagious.

On the other hand it's certainly a good idea to not dismiss the disease as a 'tempest in a teapot'. Nevertheless I'm fairly confidant that the WHO and related facilities in Asia will get a handle on the disease before it get's out of hand. I certainly wouldn't put off travel planms to Vancouver because of it.

The most danger I feel in my everyday life is meeting the Basset Hound I know named Sars.
He's a lovely dog but somewhat unruly and smelly, he jumps on me and drools a lot.
Such is life in the City!

Pappy. no worries. I work in the hotel industry downtown, and its just not a problem, except for the media hype of course. There are 4 cases in Vancouver, 2 of them recovered, and the other 2 are considered 'probable.' That's it. come on over, we'd love to have you!

Yes, as Barb said, no worries. A couple of people returned from Asia with Sars recently, but are isolated and being treated.

Here is what I wrote on another SARS thread:
Message: Read the other threads about SARS... In my opinion, you are just as likely to catch SARS on your trip as you are having your plane hijacked by terrorists. - Sorry if this comparison offends anyone.- I just want to make a point: Yes it is possible...but highly unlikely.
Remember to wash your hands as often as you can and you will probably be just fine. ENJOY your trip!!
