Itinery: Ottawa to Newfoundland
Hi to all the East Coast experts out there.
We are planning our first trip to Newfoundland from Ottawa and would like to drive because of camping gear (there are three of us, including an eight-year-old). Can you suggest a simple yet scenic route to get us there?
First thoughts: drive all night to Moncton to get that bit over with. Take it slower, maybe three days in and around Nova Scotia, including the Cabot Trail. Take the ferry from Sydney and make our way up to Gros Morne. Spend the next week there. Return.
We have a total of 14 days. We would consider an inn or two, in between campsites.
What do you think?? Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

I would suggest you try to do the midnight ferry crossing to Nfld. Book a cabin that way you have a bathroom/shower and an opportunity to sleep. You will arrive early in the morning, and could take your time up to Gros Morne. Cornerbrook is the largest town between destinations.
In terms of driving from Ottawa, I would spend a day in Shediac camping. Beautiful beach area located just outside of Moncton. You may even want to do a few days here if the weather cooperates. From there, you are approximately 4.5 hours to Cape Breton Island (Port Hawkesbury). If you want to do the trail, perhaps Port Hood area may be a good spot to camp. A day to travel to Inverness (great camping spot with a beach), and then another day to finish the trail. You could spend the night in Baddeck (again some great camping spots), or head to the ferry in Sydney.
Hope this helps.
