Hotels in Toronto

Can anyone recommend good 3-5 star hotels in good locations in Toronto? I'm planning on staying for 3-5 nights in late January or early February and yes I know how cold it will be!! Ha ha!! Thanks for any comments that you'd care to make.

Glen.

Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Royal York, Hyatt, Sheraton Center, Westin Harbor Castle, Hilton, Metropolitan, Windsor Arms, King Edward are all first class hotels with good restaurants and excellent service. All are located within the main Toronto business district.
BAK
Brain has named the major hotels. The only thing I can add is that the Westin Harbor Castel is a nice hotel, but it is right on the water. It is particularly cold there in January. Getting anywhere from the Westin in the winter is quite a chore.
The Four Seasons and the new Park Hyatt are located in the middle of Toronto's Rodeo Drive. If you are into high class shopping, you want to be there. Actual downtown hotels like the Royal York are convenient to the Eton Center, a hugh shopping mall, and the Pantages -- home of Phantom of the Opera.
You should keep your original hotel invoices. Canada is the only country I know of that refunds their Goods and Services Tax on hotel rooms. The tax can amount to quite a bit of money. Of course, you can get a refund of GST paid on goods. Ask for a GST refund form at the hotel reception desk. Don't let some company do the paperwork for you. They charge a hefty sum for a very simple process.
If you are thinking of making major purchases, you should check prices in the US. The savings in Canada can be real. The Canadian dollar is worth about 68 cents US. As the Canadian dollar has depreciated against the US dollar many Canadian merchants have not been able to pass their raising cost on the consumer. And of course you ulitmately pay no sales tax, because the GST is refunded. However, having said this, the fact is the savings are spotty. Substantial in some cases, non existent in others.
Lastly, you should shop carefully for a room. The dead of winter is not the height of the tourist season. Everyone will be having super specials. Even in the summer, hotel rooms in Toronto are dirt cheap. I stayed at the new Park Hyatt which would cost $600 (including taxes) in New York for about $150 US (no taxes).

No one has mentioned the Park Plaza (the name may be preceded now with another name). We LOVED this place. In the Bloor/Yorkville neighborhood just around the corner from the Four Seasons. Gorgeous, friendly, comfortable, excellent value for the dollar. We enjoyed one of our finest meals ever in the restaurant on the roof, and the cocktail lounge is enormously comfortable. Both have fabulous views of the city below.

The Park Plaza is now the Park Hyatt. It is about four times bigger now. It has metamorphosed from an intimate old world like hotel into a leviathan going toe to toe with the Four Seasons. It is nice in its own way.

just got back from TO, stayed at the Hilton for the third time, got a $379 room for $125 US, free executive lounge privileges - all you have to do is ask. great pool, good restaurants, right on the PATH for underground carousing. ask for a lake view. this gets my vote.

Just got back from Toronto and loved it.When considering a hotel I would consider one that is hooked up to the underground city or very close to it. It can be a life saver for something to do or help get around if the weather is bad. We were there when the temperature index hit 122 degrees(humidity and temp) and is was our saviour. We stayed at the Royal York. Very nice.Rooms are small you have to ask for the newly renovated ones they are a little bigger, by still no big. Ask about AAA rate. The Westin Harbor is a little of the beaten path in the winter I would think. Its on the harbor and a walk to the subways. For breakfast you might want to check out a place called Marche, very different concept in eating than I've seen in NY and not expensive. If you don't want to carry too much US cash, charge where possible to get the best daily rate. Otherwise, some restaurants post a sign that says they will give a discount for US dollars, probably you can't charge there. Enjoy.
June
