Hotel Recommendation

Hi. I was wondering if anyone who has visited Montreal recently or does so regularly or is a native could recommend
a nice hotel in an optimum location. I heard of one hotel that is a adjacent/attached to a popular club? Not big on bed n breakfasts and I'd rather not drain my wallet at a ritz carlton.Something between $85 and $125 (u.S.)
Of course I wouldn't knock an "amazing bargain" either. Also I'm wondering if Montreal drivers are maniacs on the order of us NYC people. I am bringing a car but am wondering if most people use the subway.
Any informed help here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! P.S. This is scheduled to be a mid-may (2001) visit.

New York drivers are little babies compared to Montreal, but you do share the no right turn on a red light rule.

Never trust a pedestian to obey a traffic light.

You'll have trouble finding first rate hotels for that little money. Imagine NYC rates, converted, etc. to about 60%what NYC is. i.e. If a New York hotel, in NY dollars is $400 a night, a similar room in Montreal would be $240 US.

Montreal has a great many excellent hotels. Give us some examples of NY hotels youlike, and we'll tell you what is similar in Montreal.

BAK

We know nothing about Montreal, but we have chosen the Hotel Travelodge Montreal Centre, 50 Rene-Levesque W. for May 22. We are budget travelers.

Our quoted rate for two persons, one bed (seniors) is $75.60. And it's supposed to include a continental breakfast. Web site is: http://www.travelodge.com

We'll be on a 30-day trip across Canada by rail using North America Rail Pass on Amtrak and Via Rail ($418 each).

Grew up in MTL. and visit at least 2x a year. I recommend:
1) Loews Hotel Vogue
2)Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel
3)Hotel de la Montagne
4)Radisson Hotel du Goveneurs
5)Chateau Versailles
6)Chateau Champlain
Most of these hotels will have websites and possibly specials.
Both pedestrians and drivers are crazy in Mtl. Unless you are going outside the city centre you won't need a car. Metro is safe and convenient. Bon Voyage.

I live in the Montreal area but I have never seen the hotel Travelodge on Rene Levesque W. I'm sure it will be fine. The transit system here is very efficient but personnally, I would not use it at night, I would feel much safer in my car.

Be prepared to pay for parking your car since most of the streets in Montreal are reserved for residents and the tickets are very expensive. There is some streets with parking meters though.

Rene Levesque is a big boulevard with a speed limit of 50Km/hour (30Mi/hour) I don't know how far west you are but you might be close to the Old Montreal which is a must see. Lots of restaurants, clubs and cafes there. Chinatown is close by to and you could go shopping on St-Catherine Street which is about a block away (one way going East to west)

Red light district is around St-Laurent and Ste-Catherine and a few blocks west is St-Denis Street (runs south to north)with lots of terrasses and little clubs in between Ste-Catherine and De Maisonneuve.

Make sure to visit the Mount Royal (the mountain) for a nice walk, You'll get a nice view of the city when you reach the top.

Have a great trip!

When we go to Montreal we stay at the following:
Sheraton Hotel downtown- my kids love it. It has a great pool, is within walking distance to all the shops, and it was quite reasonable. You didn't say when you were going, but Montreal often has special promotions that include breakfast in their rates. We also stayed at the Marriott on Sherbrooke. It was across from the Sheraton Four Points which also looked nice. When we do family functions we stay at Ruby Foo's Hotel. The parking is free and it's easy access to everything via the Decarie Expy. Have fun.

I have been to Montreal many times, it is one of the livliest, safest cities in
North America. If you want to stay in the downtown business/shopping district, I would reccommend the Delta or the Holiday in Center City (there is also a Holiday Inn in Chinatown). These hotels have all the amenities, and run about $125 a night US. A few blocks further east is the Latin Quarter, which is where much of the night life, cafes, street entertainment, etc is to be found. A good large hotel in the area is the Crowne Plaza. There are many smaller European hotels on Sherbrooke East (a very nice boulivard), just a short walk to all the action on St Laurent and St. Denis. For a simple but pleasant hotel, try the Residence du Voyaguer, the Hotel du Paris, or the Argoat. They will run about $80 a night with a minimal breakfast. We always walk or take the Metro, even late at night. Driving in Montreal is actually not that bad, however.

We've stayed at the Chateau Royal Suites. The location is great ... Cresent St. right near the Hard Rock and lots of other little cafes & restaurants. The the cost is very reasonable ... Probably 75-100 US for a good size suite.

Just came back from Montreal and stayed at the Delta Montreal, which is near McGill University and convenient to just about anything else you'd want to see. We got a special rate that came out to under $100. The rooms are very large and the staff is extremely friendly and eager to please. I thought the place a great bargain, and I would definitely stay there again.
