I stayed at the metropolitan last March. Great service, nice rooms etc. Everything you'd expect from a high class hotel. Rooms were a little small. Restaurants (specifically the main floor one - can't remember the name) were excellent especially breakfast. Hotel is about 3 blocks from Younge Street (the main drag). Need to know anything else?

It is a central location, with shops (both trendy and the typical chains) in and around the surrounding blocks. But again, you are about 2 to 4 blocks to anything or further depending upon where you are wanting to go. My wife and I did walk those blocks at night, I feeling more unsafe than her (she's braver than I!!!). We didn't feel too threatened, as there were the usual pan handlers etc looking for money, but every so often you wonder... Daytime walking you have nothing to worry about. Depending upon what you are wanting to do and what time of year you are going, you may want to consider something closer to the waterfront - there are some fabulous places to stay down there. If I went back, I would consider looking in that area before going back to the "Met", just for proximity sake.
