We will be staying in Charlottetown for 3 days in August. None of the hotels recommended to us by friends were available so we booked at the Rodd Royalty Inn. Has anyone out there every stayed at this hotel? Any comments? We're a little worried. <BR>Also, any comments on where to eat? Would Summerside be a better location choice? <BR> <BR>Thanks for any comments!!

Hi. I think one of the charms of a place like Charlottetown is the bed and breakfasts. There are 100s of them and I think they are so much cosier than an indifferent hotel. The PEI government has a great website (can get it for you if you want) and it gives you great info on accommodation etc. They will even sent you a magazine with all the details in it. I just loved Charlottetown (I was there last June). Hope you have a great time. <BR> <BR>Anne (like Anne of Green Gables)

Lauren: <BR>Don't be worried by your choice - the Rodd chain of hotels are very nice and well-respected in the area. I haven't stayed at the Rodd Royalty itself, but I have stayed at the Rodd Brudenell, and it was excellent. <BR> <BR>I suggest you take Anne's advice & do a search on PEI Tourism and get a copy of their guide - I have one for Summer 2000 and its excellent. As for where to eat, I'd recommend looking for one of the many "lobster dinners" in some of the rural areas - they give you a good feed at a reasonable price. No real advantage to Summerside over Charlottetown - any place you'll want to visit is accessable from both spots. You'll have a great time - enjoy! <BR> <BR>Tim

Thanks for the replies! We're really not the B&B types. I like to look at them but not necessarily stay there. I ordered my guide some time ago but still have not received it. I have however searched the web but, not knowing PEI, I am not sure how far some of the places are from Charlottetown. Further, Idon'twant to put too much faith in advertising - would rather the reccommendation of a fellow traveller or, better yet, an Islander!! <BR>Thanks again!

Hi Lauren <BR> <BR>It's Anne again. Have you checked the PEI Government site (www.gov.pe.ca)? I have found it very useful and when I ordered their guide it arrived within two weeks (to Australia). Maybe you should try again. Also, PEI is quite small so nothing is too far away and the people are just so incredibly friendly. I caught a mini-bus from Halifax to PEI with a girl from Toronto and three Islanders. One of the Islanders was being picked up by her mum, so she loaded me and the Toronto girl into the car, gave us a tour of Charlottetown and delivered us to our B&Bs, gave us her phone number told us to ring her if we needed any help. How often does that happen these days??? Great people Canadians!!! <BR> <BR>Anne

Anne, <BR> <BR>I am originally from another small island in Atlantic Canada - Cape Breton. I haven't lived there for for 15 years but I am still amazed when people comment on how friendly Atlantic Canadians are. To me it just seems that this is normal behaviour and I would be more likely to ask the question "Why wouldn't they do that!!! I am so glad you had a good experience in Canada. Come back again soon!!!

Hi Lauren <BR>I know what you mean when you say "why wouldn't the people be like that'. It's just that too often today people just don't care or are quite wary of strangers. I guess in my case, we all spent several hours together in that mini-van and all being women none of us could keep quiet for very long (I know for sure I can't) and sure enough within an hour we know all about each other. I also find that Canadians are very similar in their thinking to Australian, I guess that may have something to do with being part of the Commonwealth. Whatever it is, I like it. On a similar note, I live in Perth close to a large nature reserve called Kings Park. It overlooks the city and the views are incredible. I go walking most afternoons and the Park is usually packed with tourists. I always offer to take photos of people so the whole family or the honeymoon couple can be together in the picture. While people are always grateful too often you can see that "what's going on here" look. Sad reflection on society. <BR>By-the-way, I heading back Toronto way on 23 July. Looking forward to a week at the summer cottage near Lake Huron and a week in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. <BR> <BR>Anne
