Some more ideas: in Old Montreal the Pointe-à-Callière Museum (archaeology and history) and Château Ramezay, the Biosphère at Parc Jean-Drapeau, McCord Museum near McGill, the Lachine Canal.

This is Montreal's 375th birthday and Canada's 150th so there are many special exhibits and activities.

The tourist web site is very good. I like this section that describes the different neighborhoods

I am in Montreal right now for the international jazz festival which still has days to run. Today a Caribbean parade is scheduled in another part of the city; next weekend there is a car race in the streets called Formula Three which leaves me clueless but the annual Formula One race was run a month ago. After the jazzfest comes the big Just For Laughs week and several fireworks displays over the river are ongoing. Cirque du Soleil and the many other Montreal-based circuses have taken to the streets with free performances that are part gymnastics and part contemporary art instalments. The McCord museum has a startling display of classic magicians posters plus a collection of hostess uniforms from Expo 67. The fine arts museum is commemorating the Summer of Love 50 years ago.
This is a typical schedule. In summer there are always things happening. To get the details, start with the Montreal city tourist website.

When we thought of a Montreal trip, we did not expect quite the variety of places and events that await us. As always, it's best to check with all of you Fodorites. many thanks to all.
