Information on Dunk Island
I am trying to determine where my future wife and I will go on our honeymoon during the last two weeks of October, 2000. We have heard of Dunk Island off of the Austrialian coast and I was hoping to get a response from people who have been there to see if they think it would be a good honeymoon location. We are looking for a romantic location with beautiful beaches, secluded, yet with enough entertainment to sustain a two week stay. We are also considering Hawaii and French Polynesia. Our budget is $7,500. What would you recommend?

Hello, Steve - we have been to Dunk Island altho' a few years ago. It is a very popular place for "day-trippers" which we were at that time. Quite crowded. Two weeks would be way too long there. According to what I have read recently, it has been bought by P&O and according to the article "it is now likely Dunk will get a welcome face-lift". There are many other choices of islands at the GBR.

My husband and I have had two holidays on Dunk, the last one in July 99 for 2 weeks, which was far too long. P&O have taken over and have made some improvements. The Food & Beverage is not that great, lousy coffee and not alot of choice in dining and it is fairly expensive, ie Seafood Buffet was A$45.00 per head. Not alot do on Island, the beaches are average with alot of day trippers using guest facilities!

So here we go again - someone from some other country went to Dunk island and didn't like it so suggests that the other person go to Tahiti. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME Tahiti is expensive - dirty - and not that interesting in that there is no world heritage reef. If Louise's only trip to an Australian island was Dunk then that's her problem but why tell people to go to Tahiti when there are so many wonderful places on the GBR when you have not been to them. Hayman, Brampton, Hamilton,Lizard , Orpheous , etc etc
Please if you do not have much information to give DON'T GIVE ANY or at least say " I went to Dunk but didn't like it" . I went to NY and didn't like it but that does not mean that I cannot suggest anywhere else in the USA
Where are the old posters who knew this country and gave a lot of advise?

My goodness, Alan, you didn't have to jump all over me. I don't think I gave Dunk Island a bad report at all. Kathryn gave a worse report than I. Steve was asking for enough entertainment for a two week stay. I am sure he has taken his honeymoon by now as his post was over two years old. By the way, I have been to at least eight if not more GBR islands during our four trips to the GBR. I just gave a vote for Tahiti because I have never been there and it seems very romantic. Have since been there to four islands and loved it but then your taste obviously is different than mine.

OK Louise you have been to many islands but this person obviously has not been to the GBR so you go off and suggest Tahiti!!
For what its worth I lived for many years in the north of Qld and I have been to ALL of the islands and there is nothing in Tahiti to compare with the best of the GBR. Nor is there anything in Tahiti that has any like our reef.
There is however an expensive, dirty place in the Pacific which is all too happy to grab money off unsuspecting people.
To suggest a place that you have not been too against the GBR is outrageous.
I don't care too hoots what Dunk is like because for my money its probably the worst of the GBR islands after Green. Have you been to Hinchinbrook, Hayman, Brampton, Lindeman ??????
Or even one of the coral cays on the outer reef or the many uninhabited islands of the Whitsundays where you can stay in absolute bliss and visit the other islands for the night life? Well have you?

Again, seeking any specific information on Dunk Island, positive or negative. I am travling with small children and would like to hear of your recent experience on this island. In advance, thank you. As a "ps" to Alan, this message is not intended to insult you or any other Australian.
