I am glad you are still "mine." All well here, wish we were there :-) Have to check your blog...did you blog on PNG?

(sorry re off-topic tangent all!)

Clifton Aug 30th, 2010 07:53 PM

Get Together, dottie.

Mystery to me why it's GTG, instead of GT, but that seems to be the Fodors abbreviation.

Maybe it's that we Get To Gather. We're allowed to accumulate, in person, from time to time. Lucky for us!

AlanJG Aug 30th, 2010 09:28 PM

Clifton I chuckled at your response.

Toucan2, have not blogged in a long time. Got out of the habit but should reform! Had a great time in PNG, saw lots of birds, a few mammals and reptiles. Had three inquiries about leading tours there but said only general natural history ones with maybe a bit of culture thrown in. I don't want to work as hard as our guide did! He was really good, particularly his auditory skills were outstanding.

Mystery solved - thanks Clifton ... "Maybe it's that we Get To Gather .... "

Obviously someone heard the Kiwis discussing it ... ;)

dotty Aug 31st, 2010 01:27 AM

Hey, how about Alice Springs / Darwin in July then this little kiwi could gather with y'all.

kiwi_rob Aug 31st, 2010 01:38 AM

Even more simple than that, Bokhara. GT is easily confused with that wee drinkie that usually has a slice of lemon in it, and you wouldn't want everyone to think that all that was being organised was a monumental p...-up, would you?
Rob.

I could do June in Sydney. That would also be my first GTG. Aussie_10 I am dying to know if you are twice as good as me!

Bokhara2 Sep 1st, 2010 11:51 PM

Well might you fear such an accusation, Rob!

I was introduced to G, not in the usual manner of G & T, but G + L&P, by my husband's Kiwi cousin in Wellington. Thereafter, I had the family in paroxysms of laughter at my attempts to pronounce, "Paeroa". It was a dreadfully humiliating experience for a gentle 20something year old. Took years of therapy to recover.

And, could you please bring some L&P to the next GTG?

kiwi_rob Sep 2nd, 2010 12:10 AM

Did the difficulty in pronunciation continue once the effect of the G had worn off?

dotty Sep 2nd, 2010 12:59 AM

Not to tske away from stormbird's idea but has there ever been a Kiwi GTG? Would there be many people interested if one was organised?
Much as I would love to attend the Aussie GTG I am not able to take time off in May or June, but the idea has got me thinking.

Go the netballers!

That's when it started! Up until then, I'd have been speaking in tongues!

Sorry Stormbird, I'll behave now.

stormbird Sep 2nd, 2010 02:44 PM

Behaviour quite acceptable kiwi_rob. Aaah I remember many a G&T when we lived in PNG. Well, you see, of course, one had to drink the T because it contained quinine, which helped with the fight against malaria. So if you're drinking T you'd better be drinking it with a bit of G.

We actually used to buy the G by the carton never by the bottle! You couldn't actually buy any grog on a Thursday (pay day) - so developed Thirsty Thursdays!

Well it must have worked because I never got malaria!

Susan7 Sep 2nd, 2010 02:52 PM

Sounds like a very sensible way to ward off malaria to me!

Toucan2 Sep 2nd, 2010 03:19 PM

Gin? There will be Gin? Perhaps I ought to reconsider coming your way if there will be G&Ts involved. My favorite summer drink. Along with Margaritas. And perhaps the occasional cold beer.

pat_woolford Sep 2nd, 2010 05:17 PM

Except it'll be winter Toucan!

Stormbird, I usually get to Sydney once a year, but I think I'll need to go before June, haven't decided yet as waiting for outcome of husband's operation.

Any takers for Cairns? Weather will be better, Alan has made a great offer and I can get everyone 20% off most reef trips.

Toucan2 Sep 2nd, 2010 07:09 PM

I know, but in my heart it will be summer :-)

niteshchandra Sep 2nd, 2010 07:12 PM

or maybe it's a 'get together gig'!! :-)

stormbird Sep 2nd, 2010 10:55 PM

Hi Pat,

Yes I was thinking Alan's kind offer could work out great! And the weather would be perfect. I'm up for anywhere really. So I guess we need more input and eventually people to just say well I want to go to Cairns! Or I want to go to the Gold Coast and take a vote?

I'm not sure how to proceed - do we just let this thread float along for a bit and see what comes back? Or do I have to get tough on you all and say come on people a decision please?

aussie_10 Sep 2nd, 2010 11:23 PM

Hi aussiefive...never twice as good! I enjoyed your trip report

margo_oz Sep 3rd, 2010 09:27 PM

I can do Cairns.

I guess Pat's recovered from my last visit - but not Mike!

Oh, dear! :(
