Thanks for the great trip report, hawaiiantraveler! I've been away (again) so am a rather sporadic visitor to this site. I've also done BKK and Hong Kong in one trip (but never Tokyo). That was my first trip to Asia (3 1/2 years ago, and seven trips later... LOL) Now, I just keep going back to BKK and skip the other places. Dear hubby has not been to HK yet so we will go there together in the future.

I am also a UA ff. I fly out of ORD all the time, and am also a premier exec, so I usually get my upgrades to business class. I flew 63k miles on UA last year! I am actually going to fly on Swiss Air in less than two weeks to Zurich. No upgrade... but after all the trips to BKK, Europe is a piece of cake! LOL

My next trip to BKK will maybe be this summer sometime. It depends on how well my "stuff" does at the flea markets and shows. If I need to, I can go on a buying trip anytime. The web site doesn't seem to be taking shape anytime soon... sorry! I still "own" the domain name, but just can't seem to find the time to sit down and learn how to put stuff on it!

If I don't need a buying trip, then the next trip to BKK will probably be Sept/Oct of this year. We are also considering a trip during the holidays again.

To Bob...
You MUST give The Bed a try! It really is my most favorite restaurant in BKK. You will see all ages (and sizes) there, and everyone really is enjoying the food and atmosphere! You just take off your shoes and climb on and ENJOY!! It's a very unique and tasty experience.

Peter: Sorry, I got off the subject! With all the shopping you two did, did you have to buy extra suitcases to get everything home? What about customs. Sounds like you got lots of jewelry and other expensive stuff. I've never brought home anything more than the $800 allowance so have never had to pay the extra duty. If I am on a "serious" buying trip, we (our family) fill a container for shipping. A friend buys and then ships home, but I think that can be a bit expensive to do.

I shall try to jump into this site as often as I can, but will be on the road to Oklahoma and then off to Zurich right after that. (loving my new retirement status)

Carol

Thanks for the great trip report, Peter. It just makes me want to go back sooner. I was just in BKK for two weeks in February, and am looking at Sept/Oct for the next trip. My hubby, son and I want to go to the big trade show in China on the next trip. Not sure of the dates... but it is in Oct.

Carol

Oh... Bob... you MUST give THE BED a try!!! You'll love it!!!

Bob,
No, I've not tried Faces yet. Next time...
DO try to work The Bed into your busy schedule though. You won't be the least disappointed, I'm sure. You just might get used to eating "in bed"... who knows! LOL

I shall pass the message along to my son. I really should try to get him interested in submitting comments on this forum! But... ah, there is this big BOOK project... and it is taking up a lot of his and my spare time!

Bob-- glad you're trying Bed. I was dubious but had a great time. I think you will also and the food is excellent.

we claimed some and wore some jewelry back. when we got home the customs agent glanced at my claim and said welcome home so it was no problem. we also took an extra empty 26" suitcase with us and filled it up pretty quickly. I think that was Kathie's suggestion that I followed.

It sounds like a fabulous trip. I'm so glad that my name "parted the Red Sea" at SJ. I've been buying from them for 20 years.

Like so mnay of us on this board, it sounds like you love Bangkok. I'm headed back in November, and yes, I'm the one who always takes one empty suitcase. I never come home with it empty.

The Bed restaurant sounded like such a gimmick, I wasn't sure I'd try it. I'll put it on my list for this year given all the great recommendations.

Prices were around 1300 to 1400 baht per person as I recall but this includes appetizer, entree and dessert.
Don't forget to take your camera with you! Keep thinking you'll hate it and maybe they'll suprise you.
richard:
We were there for seven days 2/23 thru 3/2. The first 3 days was hot 96 F during the days and a hot 84 F at night. It then cooled down for the remainder of our time there to 84 F days and 71 F at night with a nice breeze.

i've usually found the weather in bkk to be in the 60's and 70's with a cool breeze most of the time....oh that's in the air conditioning...i bet you meant outside where it is 85-110 F and humid as hell...

I always take an empty duffel bag, which isn't empty when I come home. I've also had to purchase extra duffels while in BKK. I'm like you, I pack the stuff, wear some, and write up my claim and have had no problems.

Institcher:
The trip to Tulsa is for a different sort of business trip. It has nothing to do w/my stuff. It's a hubby trip.

The Bed may be a gimmick, but it is STILL my favorite restaurant in BKK. I think we paid 1090 baht per person, and that was for the 3 course meal. We, as usual, got wine as well. That cost us a little bit more.

For those who were interested:
We just received our teak coffee table today in one piece. It was packed in very well in one crate and the price for shipping from BKK to HNL was only 186.00 US. Of course had I known that I would have asked for more of a discount. Aloha!

i can't believe the shipping price....that is fantastic....hope you enjoy it....the humidity in HI should be enough to protect the wood....that is one thing that people always raise on bringing things home....we have to heat our house in the winter and it is very dry and even things from local wood makers sometime crack...
