Travel in Taiwan. solo

I'm from the US, and am planning on traveling to Taiwan in 4/25 solo. I'm interested in foregoing an overall tour and instead getting to Taipei and arranging tours and stays on the island myself. This is partly due to cost, and also wanting to be more in touch with the local population. I want to spend time in Taipei, and also have time in nature, including being able to hang out, swim at some of the beaches.
Any input on whether this is an advisable plan, and if so how to implement would be appreciated. I don't speak/read the Taiwanese languages.
Thank you.

I visited Taiwan solo some years back and had no difficulties. I did not use tours, and traveled by public transport, aside from a car and driver for one day in Taroko Gorge (the second day I used the bus).
