rhkkmk Jul 20th, 2010 05:18 PM

Here's my summary of the results. Fodor's doesn't allow tabs so it's not pretty. The number of travelers is in parentheses, followed by rankings for the three destinations. (When ranges were given, the larger number is used.) Overall there is a slight preference for India. Only two respondents expressed a strong preference for Burma over India.

(#) India- Burma- Other- Comment

NYWoman (1) 10-10-6; not Mekong
Kuranosuke (2) 10-9-?
Indiana (2) 10 for India in 2012
Kathy (2) 9-9-9; usual Burma (5); Ganges (9)
Bob (2) 8-8-8
Eks (1) 8-7-0; Chindwin only
Marija (2) 5-10-10
LA (2) 5-10-9
HawaiiTr (2) 5-4-4;5 on Ganges
Hanuman plans 3 weeks in advance
Offwego (1) personal communication with dogster
Leslie yes to India
Gertie who knows
Thursday will consider if we're in Burma in February and can get her a cabin for under $300

For those of us that exist in the abstract realm of thought, the physical act of reducing our thoughts to typewritten words is overly confining. Our ideas are separate from our inability to communicate them. Plus, we're not great at proofreading.

2g Jul 21st, 2010 11:18 AM

Count me in :-D

Elizabeth_S Jul 21st, 2010 11:41 AM

I weighed in above that we would consider India in early 2012....for 2

Marija Jul 21st, 2010 12:23 PM

Sorry, 2g. Don't think you're compatible with us. Foddoderers are a secretive bunch when it comes to underwear colour. http://www.fodors.com/community/fodo...-underwear.cfm

rhkkmk Jul 21st, 2010 12:27 PM

might it be a good idea for our leader to contact a few vendors to see if boats are even available....

2g Jul 21st, 2010 12:35 PM

Your leader is trying to get a free trip for himself!!!!!!!!!

He'll travel gratis on your dime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ekscrunchy Jul 21st, 2010 01:18 PM

Did I misunderstand about the third possible destination?

The numbers in the compilation are for India/Burma/other? Or India/Burma/Mekong?

Marija Jul 21st, 2010 01:25 PM

The intent was India/Burma/Other. If I misunderstood anyone, speak up and I'll modify the list.

Craig Jul 21st, 2010 01:29 PM

Marija, very funny. Might I suggest that 2g would also be incompatible with your (our) fearless leader:

Getting back on topic - I'm lurking here for the most part. If the consensus time-frame works for us, we'll do it. Destination doesn't really matter that much, although Myanmar would be our top choice - can't do it before 2012.

Marija Jul 21st, 2010 01:36 PM

Craig--fortunately 2g left the forums earlier this afternoon: http://www.fodors.com/community/fodo...ese-forums.cfm
Unfortunately he is not a man of his word. Let's agree to ignore him and he'll go away.

I'll expand the list to include the "only possible in 2012" people.

ekscrunchy Jul 21st, 2010 01:42 PM

Marija: I am sorry that I misunderstood. Not the first time!

Please change the third digit after my name to a "5." Thanks!!

Almost a dead heat. As I count, there are 11 people who are very serious (8 and above) about India, and 11 who are serious about Burma. Others iffy. Seems to be a lot of folks who won't committ to anything before 2012.

So, what now?

My suggestion would be to see what's available in 2011 (despite the allegedly poor economy, some boats--c.f. the Marguerite--are already almost fully booked). Or see what's charterable (the Road to Mandalay is available for private bookings, for example, but it takes 84 people to fill'er up).

If we put one or two choice itineraries out there, and let everyone vote, would that work. Or just have someone choose one trip and see who hops on? I suspect if someone who's trusted makes an educated choice, the rest of us layabouts who want decisions made for us will hop aboard. Or not.
I don't know if I can think about 2012. I may be dead. Or broke.

Kathie Jul 21st, 2010 05:49 PM

I think we need some more info from dogster. He believes he can get us a real deal on an India cruise. How about an itinerary and costs?

And likewise for Burma. How many staterooms would we need to fill for the Road to Mandalay to schedule the itinerary we want? Costs?

I think more details would be likely to help people decide if they are interested.

LAleslie Jul 21st, 2010 05:56 PM

I'm more interested in the itinerary/boat than the "deal" Kathie, because "deals" often aren't. But I agree we should wait till dogster chimes in. He's the expert, and I trust his taste. (Heh. Most of the time.) Though sometimes I get the feeling he's doing this to use us as material. But I don't mind. At this point in my life, I'm well used.

Taking an on-line community from cyberspace to Asian riverways does sound like a project to fire up the imagination of dear old Impresario Dog.

This is interesting...
