Thailand: Phuket Favorite Things To Do
Still hoping to get down there some day.
Trying to decide if four nights (three full days) is a good amount of time for a first visit.
Also interested in what you folks like to do and see there along with eating and nightlife suggestions.
Here's my novice list:
Day trip to Phi Phi Island (save for another trip and stay there?)
Khao Sok National Park Jungle Safari
Tour Phang Nga Bay
Tour Old Phuket Town
Visit Wat Chalong
Visit Bangla Road at night
Go to Phuket Fantasca Show
Go to Simon Cabaret
And will I need to rent a car or hire a cat and driver? Or will it be better to sign up for a small tour group?

Degas,
When I go to Phuket, it's for relaxation and not much touring. I won't comment on your list. But I have done the day trip to Phi Phi, but would probably suggest you wait and do another trip there, when you can stay for a few days (even though I've not done that).
There are some here who have rented a car to drive around. We have not done that; we just opt to stay around Kata/Kata Noi beach area and walk around there. If we want to go to Patong (not really) we take a taxi or tsongtau (truck with benches in the back).
You can get a really great meal at either one of Mom Tri's restaurants. The Boathouse Grill Room is located at the Boathouse resort on Kata Beach. Mom Tri's Kitchen (more ambiance) is located overlooking Kata Noi Beach at Mom Tri's Villa Royale Resort (fabulous place to stay if you want to spend some pretty big $$$$).

For me, if you've gone to Phuket and haven't seen Phang Nga Bay (preferably by sea canoe) then you might as well have stayed home. It's a fantastic scene you won't see anywhere else.
The other things are pretty forgettable.

hi degas
we are just planning a stay in phuket. we were there 3 nights but we are rearranging our trip to stay 4 as we had too much moving around before. Easily enough to do in 4 nights/3 days i think without stepping foot in patong - bangla road would invite too many questions from my four year old
I am looking in particular at a few trips i found recommended on trip advisor
John Gray Sea Canoe - tour of the hongs by starlight - got to do it on my own as john will stay to look after the girls at the hotel but am v excited about that one
Phuket Sail Tours - with Captain Mark - best tour is again meant to be of phang nga bay and includes the hongs. had some email communications with captain mark, sounds a great guy and this trip which he comes on is meant to be a great day. for us, the opportunity to go by sail rather than motor is an attractive one.
simba sea tours trip to phi phi (we are not doing that one as we've stayed there before but mention it of interest to you)
phuket sail tours and simba also do a number of other trips. oh - also just seen another one called river rovers which takes you up the inland waterways - v slow, looks beautiful, you see lots of birds and a different pace of life.
khao sok is quite a bit further north - if you could add khao lak onto your trip, it would be a better day trip from there otherwise you can do a fantastic tour that I would definitely do if I wasn't going with a baby which involves staying on a lake in floating houses - think whilst you are there you trek, go on longtail boat around the mangroves, kayak etc, just sounds lovely. check out khaolaklovers.com. if can squeeze a day in there, then take a snorkelling trip to the surin islands or diving/snorkelling to the similans. i went diving in the similans about 9 years ago and nothing has come close since but the snorkelling is pretty splendiferous as well!

I agree you absolutely HAVE to get out onto Phang Nga Bay. The rock formations and islands are amazing!
An interesting short diversion (especially if you have your own car, but we hired a driver) was to go to the "Big Buddha" on the hill near Kata Beach. Amazing views and the Buddha itself is enormous. They also have some great info around the base about the basic tenets of Buddhism.
