Thailand Experiences
Travellers to Thailand would you help me? I am carrying out research on what visitors to Thailand are looking for and find. If you have been to Thailand or are planning on coming, I would really appreciate it if you take the trouble to complete a questionnaire on your experiences or hopes. If you email me, I'll email you the questionnaire - it's in rich text format (takes about 16 kb). The results will be posted on the following web site some time around March 1999: http://www.geocities.com/~nesst
This research will help me with my graduate studies, and with a longer term project to support more sustainable tourism practices in Thailand. Thanks for your help!

My husband and I plan to be in Thailand for about a week in March. We will be spending a few days in Bangkok, and then want to see more of the country and people. I would love to know where you have been, what you loved, and why. Recommendations will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks
A week's not very long Ruth - I'd recommend you try places like Khao Yai National Park, which is a couple of hours to the North and East of Bangkok, and you can go west to Kanchanaburi - again head for the national parks to the west of the main town and the Bridge over the River Kwai, there's also Ayutthaya about an hour and a half North of Bangkok (but it depends how you go) - the ancient capital of Thailand - well worth a visit, the temples are fantastic and the sense of history very strong. Alternatively, spend just a couple of days in Bangkok and then head somewhere like Sukhothai for a few days - it's quiet, is the site of the first major capital of Thailand, is close to Si Satchanalai (another archaeological site), it is incredibly beautiful, and the towns and villages nearby are peaceful, not really over-run with tourists, etc.
Be warned, March can start to get pretty hot! You'll need to take it easy if you're not used to the heat. Aim to take lots of breaks in activity - just hang out in the shade of a tree, and drink lots of cooling drinks.

Natapon, I mailed your survey to you today. Hope it helps. I thoroughly enjoyed Thailand and plan to return next year. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information. My e-mail address will be changing soon, but I'll watch the board for postings.

Thanks Meg! I really appreciate it! As I said in my first posting, check back to see our web site some time around March for the results. We should have some more questions for people around that time too.
http://www.geocities.com/~nesst

We will be going to Bangkok and Koh Samui in mid March. We are in our early 40's. It will be our 20th wedding anniversary.
We were in Northern Thailand in 1994.
We were living in Brunei at the time and travelled to a number of places in South east Asia. In Thailand we flew to Bangkok, Chang Mai, took the bus to Chang Rah and flew into Mae Hong Son. We could not fly out of Mae Hong Son because of the fires. We took a mini bus back to Chang Mai. It was a great experience. My husband is a teacher and I work as a probation officer.
We'd be interested in doing your study?
Been to Thailand for nearly 15 times in the past and plan to bring a few friends this December. Will write about the trip this time for travel pages in the Phils.
Will be happy to get help in planning a bus or train tour to see Phuket again and bring the small group to Malaysia and Singapore. Can you help? Send questionnaire.
Hi to Everyone!

Sophia & I are now back in Thailand and getting ready for our move to the South (Krabi to be precise). We really appreciate all the offers of help we have received. We will be continuing the research we are working on as part of our long term plans to support the integration of the tourism industry into sustainable development in Thailand. If you are interested to learn more about who we are and what we are hoping to accomplish please have a look at our web site (http://www.geocities.com/~nesst). The web site will be undergoing some major changes in the next couple of months, but it still has the essence of what we're about.

Hope to hear from more of you in the future.

Dear Peter,

You might have found this out by now, but Songkhran has a fixed date nowadays. Songkhran actually falls on the 13th of April but celebrations can spread from around the 11th to the 16th. There is a 3-day national holiday on either the 12, 13, 14th or the 13, 14, 15th every year.

Hope this helps.
