Me and my friends (all girls) are planning to travel for a vacation this November 2012. We're thinking if we will go to Hong Kong or Singapore. This is our first time going to the places but we cant decide which destination to choose. We need to consider the weather, the expenses, and everything. Please help us

Both Singapore and Hong Kong are expensive cities. You might want another option if you are trying to keep expenses down. More reasonably priced major cities in Asia are Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, for instance.

Weather: www.weatherbase.com

What do you want to do/see/experience on this trip?

Wow, this is a tough question as Hong Kong and Singapore are really quite different so it depends on what you are looking for. Hong Kong is a really fun, busy and chaotic city. It is a riot of colour, sounds and smells (the city has a distinctive smell in parts, like dried scallops). Both cities have fun nightlife, great shopping and a little glamour but Singapore is much more organized, infinitely cleaner and maintains much more of its history (most of old Hong Kong has long since been turned down). Both Hong Kong and Singapore have beaches, as well: Repulse Bay on the south side of Hong Kong Island is a favourite of mine, and Singapore's Sentosa Island has some beaches as well (but I saw much less beach life...beaches were smaller). Great food in both cities, but Singapore (which is much more multicultural) has a great deal more variety, I would argue.

Where are you coming from and how long you're staying? Both HK and Singapore are tiny places - neither one is worth flying, say, 20+ hours to get to for a weekend. Most visitors spend a few days in either as part of longer trips to other countries. For example, China for HK; Malaysia and Indonesia for Singapore.

Hotels in HK and Singapore are expensive compared to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. However food and transport aren't really more so. There's lots of affordable food everywhere.

The answer to your question depends on how many days you have, what you would like to do.

For both HK and SG you can combine with trips to other places as well. Both have great connections to lots of great destinations.

Where is PH? Is it Philippines? I would select Singapore because the weather would no doubt be warmer. Hong Kong is probably my favorite of the two (but Singapore is a VERY close second).

But weather in Nov is the best of the year for Hong Kong. Usually cool and dry. Singapore is the same year round.

As mentioned, hotel rates are high in both. For HK, a decent 4* hotel will run you US$250 a night in November. A cheap guesthouse in a scary building may cost US$40 a night. What type of accommodation are you looking at?

Having gone to both last year, for me the choice is very easy - HK. SO much more fun for me, more action, more beautiful scenery (go to Stanley Market and the surrounding beaches in the south of the island!). The food life in Singapore was fun but otherwise every bone in my body says HK.

I think HK would be best for 3 full days-4 nights. You can find rooms at the Royal Orchid , which is quitre nice but just a little bit of a walk but you are young, from one of the main streets for $225 with tax/service per night or under $1000 for 4 nights per persoh. It is a classy place that is not too big and not off the wall pricing.

I should add food costs can be $50-100/day based upon the level of dining you choose unless you want good street food,
