I was there for a couple of hours a year ago on my way to Tibet. It was about 6am when we arrived at Chengdu Airport and I'd prearranged for a driver and guide to see the pandas since I had limited time. I had to leave the pandas at 11am to catch my onward flight. It was an amazing experience and one that I would highly recommend. Since we were the first ones there, we had the reserve to ourselves for the first 30-45 minutes. We saw quite a few adolescents sleeping, eating and playing. It was well worth it.

We saw the pandas at Chengdu a few years ago. My wife and others were able to hold a small panda and I took pictures. Cost 200 Yuan each person for about 2 minutes, but was worth it for her.

What info were you looing for?

We visited the Panda Reserve in April, 2005, and thought it well worth the time and effort. We stayed in Chengdu two nights on the way to Lhasa. That month the weather was great and the crowds, small. The pandas and the red pandas were active and all ages were represented. It is a large place with a lovely lake and water fowl.

Would love to see the pandas too. How easy is it to get to the city/town where the Reserve is? Also, do you know of any nice hotels there?

As I remember, the panda reserve is a little out of Chengdu. Chengdu is easy to get from any place in China by plane. There are many good hotels there. For a good buy, check out http://www.wotif.com/China-Chengdu-Hotels.html

Chengdu is a medium sized Chinese city with a population of 11 million.
