Nikko or Hakone

We have one day for a day trip from Tokyo and are trying to decide between Nikko and Hakone. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Clau

It depends on your interests. Both have lots of tourists, though Hakone is getting really bad - plus currently the ropeway is closed due to poisonous SO2 gases. There are buses you can use that circumvent it. Both have some good hot springs, and both are more leisurely covered over 1½-2 days instead of cramming everything into one. I'd say Hakone has a wider variety of places to see, yet Nikko is more historical with its Toshogu Shrine.

Hakone is easiest to reach, especially if your Tokyo lodging is in Shinjuku. Kamakura is even closer and, unlike Hakone and Nikko, better covered by a day trip.
