Macao
Staying in Hong Kong and thought we might go to Macao. What should we do there besides visit the casinos (which we have in the US). Where should we have lunch, dinner? Only staying for the day. Not sure if necessary to stay overnight.
What are special or local foods that we should try there? Thanks.

Go to Fernando's for lunch or dinner. The menu comes only in Portuguese and Cantonese, so ask the wait staff what to order. They are famous for their roast suckling pig and also order the prawns (or whatever else is recommended. We also had a big salad with lots of tomatoes that we shared. We asked for a wine list, and were led to the entrance to the kitchen where there were shelves of wine - point at one (all Portuguese wines) and it is yours.
Also visit the fascinating and charming historic areas to stroll.

We found the history museum to be very interesting and well done and worth a visit. We enjoyed taking the little cable car up to the Guia Fortress too. Also visited the Sun Yat Sen house. They had historical displays and photographs. It was free to go in, I believe.

I enjoy the food at Tou Tou Koi, a local Chinese restaurant near Senado Square which is a great starting point to walk around the old town, museum, church, ruins etc.

For just a day trip, you should:
1. Skip the casinos, unless you really want to see how the Chinese money launderers lay down their tens of thousands of dollars on a table.
2. Limit yourself to the historical sites on the Macau Peninsula.
3. Get a map of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and plan which ones you want to visit. You won't be able to cover half of them, so here are my suggestions - for importance and variety as well as time:
a. Ruins of St. Paul's
b. Na Tcha Temple and Section of Old City Walls (both next to St. Paul's, takes little time to visit)
c. Mount Fortress (next to St. Paul's, good view of the city, houses the Museum of Macau, which is worth visit, as mentioned by Florida1 above)
d. Lou Kau Mansion OR the bigger Mandarin's House (along with Lilau Square) - either one is enough (a Chinese mansion, in contrast to all the Portuguese churches)
e. One of the churches - my favorite is St. Joseph's, but a bit out of the way unless you're also visiting Mandarin's House. Cathedral is close to St. Paul's and Lou Kau Mansion.
f. A-Ma Temple

If you only have time for one meal, then don't have Chinese. Instead, have the Macanese-style Portuguese. Fernando's as mentioned by Kathie is fine, but takes too much time to travel down to Hac Sa and back. Instead, there are several similar restaurants near A-Ma Temple. The best is probably A Lorcha. But check business hours and make reservations.
