Hello,
We are in Luoyang only briefly and are hoping to be able to visit the Longmen Grottoes tomorrow. What is the best way to get out to the site? Our hotel have told us to take a taxi, but does anyone know if there are public transport options instead? Also, should we be booking our tickets for the site ahead or can we buy them on the day?

Bus line 81 in Luoyang goes to Longmen Grottoes entrance. But it stops on the line for people to hop on and off. the ticket is only 2 -3 yuan per person. taking nearly on hour, or at least 40 minutes to get there ( depending on your hotel location ).Originally Posted by patriciatbrogan

Taking taxi is quite cheap, and they all use meters.
Entrance fee to longmen grottoes is 90 Yuan CNY per person. You may buy the tickets on site using cash, or wireless pay. It is now shoulder season, there won't be many visitors. So you do not really need to reserve the tickets in advance.
Thank you. We ended up getting a car organised by our hotel, likely more expensive than a taxi, but we heard horror stories about taxis regularly cheating tourists by switching off their meters and charging double fares etc, just a hassle to deal with. On the way back, we got a local bus to a metro station and then took the metro to near our hotel.
We bought our tickets last night on Trip.com, very convenient, and at least no fear of missing out.
What a wonderful site the grottoes are, despite some defacement and weathering, they are still my favourite site so far in China

That is great to know you had enjoyed visiting Longmen Grottoes. and go the transfer smoothly. Yes, you are right that sometimes we do have these scams in tourist places. it even happened on me even I am a Chinese. Last year, I went to zhengzhou and got a taxi there, I was busy on the phone, and the driver did use meters, but ended up being a big detour. that was a bad experience.
