That's good news.

After that plan is implemented I suppose that it means that the gate attendants will ask to see a JR Pass holder's passport more often before waving them through.

Foreign tourists are supposed have their passports with them when traveling in Japan. Police can and do ask to see passports.

mrwunrfl,
Thats what I thought too about a more scrupulous security check to match passport to pass, instead of the usual wave through.

Very good point about having passport on person.
I've read some stories about people being taken in and grilled as to their identity and intent due to not complying with the passport on person requirement.
Visa overstay is a real issue and some police take it more seriously than others.

I still might consider the voucher as the Japan sales points seem to be limited and it would be easy to activate the pass at smaller stations without having to stay any longer at a airport than necessary.

Thank you for posting the article, kalihiwai2. That's great news. Now we can all sit in the airport departure lounge in the US, and add up our travel segments on Hyperdia, and then decide if it's worth buying a pass when we land. Kidding.

mrwunrfl and kalihiwai2--I plead ignorance about carrying a passport in Japan. I always lock my passport in my suitcase, and leave it in my hotel room. I have never been stopped--but other people have? Yikes, I didn't know that. Do you suppose I could carry a copy?

I always carry my passport with me.
I remember my family (wife, daughter and I) being approached by two officers on a train to Kagoshima and being asked to produce our passports. They were polite, but all business. They ended up helping us transfer trains once we arrived but I'm glad our passports weren't back in our room. Visa overstay abuse is taken seriously as are identification requirements and a photocopy of our passports without the current tourist visa stamp may have not sufficed. This may have been a rare occurrence but I've read of similar situations.

I've never been asked for it by Japanese police, but I always carry my passport as well wherever I am outside of the US.

I was waiting for a bus in front of Izumo station when a police officer asked/ordered/demanded to see my passport.

The only reason I had it that day was because I was using my JR Pass on a day trip from Matsue to visit Izumo Taisha.

I started carrying it all the time after that.
