Yes, car rental companies, including those in the US, could not care less about whether you have one; it is the police who would like to see something translated into their own language which indicates that you hold a valid drivers license in your home country. Hopefully you will never have to show it to anyone, as you really only need it in an accident or if you are stopped for speeding.
Curious to see if they issue you one with a Thai translation; I have one issued from the Swiss authorities and I don't think it includes a Thai translation, I will take a look at mine I don't recall.

i have never had one to drive in thailand or any place else, but after james' rants and raves last fall i will now get one before driving in thailand...
quite honestly it is just as cheap to have a car and driver, but less flexible however...
the thai rental agencies never asked for an international license, but as suggested the police may...
