If you are talking about the one south of Bangkok I would suggest just hiring a driver and going by yourself. There really isn't a lot to see other than the people selling fruit, vegetables, wares from there boats and on the shore. One can also take a short boat ride.

I agree with wiskey.

The floating market at Damneon Saduak is a wonderful experience !

Sure it's just a major tourist trap, but it was totally fascinating. Make sure you do take a boat up and down the canal, and by something! (I bought a bag of saffron.)

I would suggest going with a tour because it's easier. Also, the floating market will probably only hold your attention for an hour, so other side trips on the way back to Bangkok would be useful to fill out the day.

We stopped at Nakhon Pathom, the location of the tallest chedi in Thailand. We also visited the Rose Garden, which again was VERY touristy, yet extremely professionally run. It included a "Cultural Show" which was entertaining.

So my advice is go by tour, which also includes these extras. Unless your the adventurous type, and perhaps want to do it on your own, and visit places not on the tourist trail.

Have fun !

_______________________________________My Thailand Travelogue & Photographs
http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~fos007/fb2b.htm
Bangkok,Chiang Rai,Phuket,Krabi,Phi Phi

I spent $42 for an optional tour of Damneon Saduak and Rose Garden with lunch. 2 couples in our group hired a car with driver instead of joining the optional tour and spent less; the driver also took time to take them to his home to meet his family. This is your third option.
