Five days in Hong Kong
We have five days in Hong Kong and looking for suggestions of things to do and see including those off the "beaten path". Would appreciate suggestions for restaurants also. We are not looking to spend alot of time shopping. Appreciate any and all help you can give us.

Having been a long time resident in HK, I would recommend a trip to Tai O. It is a fishing village on the southwest corner of Lantau Island and a reminder of what old HK as a fishing village was like. You can get there by taking the MTR to the airport (not the airport express but the MTR which goes to a different station). There is a bus terminal next door and there is a bus that goes to Tai O. You might have to ask around but it should not be difficult to find. The bus ride is about an hour and pass through some of the most scenic beaches in HK.

I would also recommend a trip to one of the outer islands for seafood. Nam Ar Island is one of the choices.

As for food, if cost is not a concern, the Chinese restaurant in 5-star hotels offer the best haute Cantonese cuisine. Another one worth trying is Victoria Seafood in Admiralty.

If you like seafood, try going to Lie Mue Yun, its about 20 minutes by cab to this area. There you will find restaurants mixed with live seafood stalls. You buy your fresh live seafood (prawns, fish, lobster, etc.) and the restaurant will cook it for you. A very interesting and delicious experience.

You must try the peak tram in Central, preference at night. A ride at the Star Ferry between Hong Kong island and Kowloon, enjoy the breeze and seaview with less than HK$10. A whole day tour to Lantau island to see the biggest Buhda statue in the world (1 hour ferry from Central pier to Silvermine Bay in Lantau, then bus to the temple). Experience the horse racing on Wed night. Many more to do.... Beware of the small shops selling electronic goods or hi-fi, these sort of goods usually are fixed price and no shop should give you an exception good price, so rather go to a reputable store, e.g. Fortress, Broadway where they guarantee your goods and guarantee refund. Have a good time.

Detailed directions to Tai O --

I just went to Tai O yesterday. The way to get there is to take the Tung Chung Line subway to the Tung Chung station (30 min). Ask for the bus terminal which is right closeby, and take the No. 11 bus directly to Tai O. (no, do NOT take the airport express MTR - it doesn't take you to Tung Chung although some of the stations overlap with that of the Tung Chung Line. Plus, it costs 4 times as much since much of the space aboard is designated for large luggages.)

Warning: the bus ride is essentially a 45-minute winding-like-crazy roller coaster ride.

An hour is all that you need in Tai O, seeing little houses built along the coastline and also small temples. We didn't really care for those though - but you should be warned that we're HK locals and we could very much be biased.

After that you can track your way back, or you can take the No. 1 bus for another roller coaster ride to Mui Wo, a relatively more developed beach area, and take the ferry back to Central (30-45 minutes, depending whether you take the express ferry.)

There are some seafood restaurants in Tai O, but I wouldn't try...

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for all the wonderful ideas and suggestions, including how to get there. It is exciting for me to go online and see what new suggestions come in.
We live in a "hick" town upstate NY and it takes nearly an hour to get to the local Barnes and Nobles. Due to other commitments I haven't been able to devote a half day on the week ends to get there.
