first timer to bali
Planning to go to Bali for 10 days in November. I haven't seen any mention of rental cars and curious if it is not a good idea? Also, I have a HUGE problem with mosquitoes. Are mosquitoes a major concern or will I be able to avoid them somehow? Thanks for any input.

Self-driving isn't something I'd recommend on Bali. The roads are small and convoluted, the Indonesian drivers are crazy, and they drive on the 'wrong' side of the road. You'll find that a car with driver will probably set you back less than just renting a car elsewhere.
I have not been bothered much (if at all) by mosquitoes on Bali. There's not much still water there.

Yes, get a car and driver for the days you want to be out touring. Believe me, renting a self-drive car is not a good idea.
There are mosquitoes on Bali, whether you are bothered by them will depend on exactly where you are staying and the local conditions. Do bring along repellant, and wear long pants and long sleeves in the evening.

I would take issue only with MichaelBKK's statement that the Indonesians drive on the "wrong" side of the road. For my purposes they drive on the "right" side. Anyway, I may have missed something, but there was nothing in the OP's post to suggest that they come from a RH-driving part of the world. Not everyone, even on Fodors, is American.
