Recommendations for semi-exotic Asia travel in March?
My wife and I and our 3 year old daughter will be traveling to Asia for 3 weeks next March and would like any recommendations on the best places to go where we would encounter the best weather (least rain and heat) and most authentic- yet safe- experiences. We are not into staying in big fancy hotels, yet a shack on the beach with the bugs might not be the best with our little one in tow. We definitely want to get some beach R&R time in, but would get bored after 4-5 days in a row, so we'd like to mix it up with some adventure.
Where should we go and for how long?

We brought our 3 year old daughter to Thailand and she loved it. March is quite hot, but if you plan your days well to spend mornings sightseeing and afternoons by the pool, it isn't so bad. With 3 weeks you could go to 3 or 4 places comfortably. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Golden Triangle, Koh Samui or Phuket or similar. It's easy travel, kids are welcome.
Bali is another place that we love, more than Thailand actually, though somehow we end up in Thailand over and over. For us, Bali has much more accessible culture...you can participate rather than just be a spectator. There are beaches, but we love the inland areas around Ubud. 3 weeks is a great amount of time to spend enjoying the island...you could go to 4 places very comfortably in 3 weeks.
Easy access to Bali via Singapore, which also has lots to do. We're going to Singapore as part of our summer trip, and what started as a 2 day stay has turned into 5 days as there was so much we wanted to see and do there.

Cool weather, less heat, in March will have to be in the Southern hemisphere of Asia. Bali will be perfect during that time of the year and split your trip into two main area - the beach and Ubud(cooler in Ubud too)!
Do a search for Bali on this board and you'll find tons of information.

I'd put in another vote for Bali. There's definitely enough diversion to fill up three weeks between the beach and the inland areas. Plenty of arts and culture and lots of options of places to stay. Indonesians love children and, in my experience, children love Bali so it's a wonderful choice with a little one. Child care is reliable and readily available.
The weather is HOT all year round. You get sea breezes on the coast and it's somewhat cooler inland -- however, it's still tropical. In March you may get some rain, but it comes and goes and generally doesn't interfere with your plans.

Bali-Ubad (5-6 days), Bangkok (5 days), Phuket (4-5) Chiang Mai-don't miss Lampang Elephant Conservancy (2 days). While this is less than 21 days with flights it is about 19 and with 3 yr. old it will be enough. Neeed to select large hotels with activities for your daughter to see and hear(dance.etc.). Enjoy.
