Cheap Flight from Hong Kong to Hanoi?

My husband and I just booked a spur of the moment trip and I am in the midst of the planning now - we will be flying into Hong Kong on November 25th and out of Bangkok on December 30th.

I was looking to get a flight from Hong Kong over to Hanoi. Unfortunately I have not found anything cheaper than $340 - this is on Cathay and Vietnam Airlines. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this flight cheaper? Should I wait to get our flights there? I am concerned about doing this since we will be using an agency to help secure our visa for Vietnam and need to provide our travel information when we submit our documents.

Many thanks for the help!!!

I know this sounds like a round about way but you could fly on Air Asia from Macau to either Bangkok or Kuala Lumpar and then on to Hanoi. With luck with air asia being om time you would get into BK at 1600 and leave at 1835. Cost around $91 plus airport fees. Going to KL you have to stay overnight and the airfare is about $129

You can get visas for Vietnam in Thailand or Hong Kong (or even KL), you don’t have to get them in the US so you can wait until you get here to get airline tickets for Vietnam. As you will be here such a long time, you might be able to look around for better airfare prices.. There are Vietnamese embassies/consulates in both Bangkok and Hong Kong. Getting a visa in Hong Kong or Bangkok should be faster (I think it only takes 24 hours) and may be cheaper than going through the Vietnamese embassy in the US.

Why don’t you just go as a few day trip from Bangkok rather than trying to fly from Hong Kong? You might find cheaper flights and no changes required.

Otherwise, going through Macau is not a bad idea at all, you could spend a night there (of course that might wipe out the savings). I am not a huge fan of all the construction going on there for the casinos, but the colonial bits are interesting. If you just want to go to Macau airport, you take the ferry from Hong Kong (about an hour) and then the airport bus or a taxi for about 20-30 minutes to the airport. Ferries runs pretty much constantly from early in the morning until late at night (got to get the gamblers to the tables....)

For info on flights into Macau, the Macau airport, transport by ferry to Hong Kong, look at
http://www.macau-airport.gov.mo/tran...on_local.phtml. The ferry takes about an hour. If you are staying in a hotel on the Hong Kong Island Side, you want the Turbo Jet ferry, go to http://www.turbojet.com.hk/. If you are staying on the Kowloon side, you want the First Ferry, go to http://www.nwff.com.hk/. Otherwise, you have to schlep over bag and baggage over to the other side of the harbour. Not really problem, but could be an expensive cab ride as you probably don’t want to take the MTR subway.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Vietnam is at http://www.mofa.gov.vn/vi/, click the menu in the upper right to choose English. They have info on all their embassies and consulates worldwide at http://www.mofa.gov.vn/en/bng_vietna...ns050119142406 . Those websites will give details on how to apply for visas in Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Thank you so much for all of the information! It is very helpful. Not sure yet what we are planning on doing, but will hopefully have a rough itinerary by the end of the week.

Not sure if they can give you the routing you need, but try www.whichbudget.com.

I just returned from Vietnam today. You don't need to provide flight info with your visa application.

There is a section on the application for "Name, address of your contact in Vietnam (organization or individual)". In that section I put the name and address of the Vietnamese travel agent I was working with at the time. I ultimately decided not to use their services.

If I were to do it again I would put the name and address of the hotel I was going to use on the first night.

It was quick and relatively painless to send my US passport to D.C. to get the visa. Finding your post office will probably be easier than finding the VN consulate in H.K. (but it might be worthwhile putting off getting the visa until you have found an acceptable airfare).

Thanks so much for all the information - definitely has been very useful!!!!

But I have been playing around with our itinerary trying to get direct flights to the places we are going. I saw that Siem Reap Air has a direct flight from Hong Kong to Siem Reap. I know that I can't book it online, but was wondering if anyone has the 800-number (I saw someone mention this) or a travel agent that I could use to do multiple flight bookings.

Thanks!!! We leave in just a couple of days, so I am frantically trying to get all this booked!

We are going to have to do our Vietnam Visas while we are there as we just didn't have the time to do it in the US before we leave.

Siem Reap Airlines is a partner of Bangkok Airlines. If you phone or e-mail a Bangkok air office they can do the booking or direct to a where you can. See here for their offices http://www.bangkokair.com/contact/

Also look into the use of the Bangkok Air Discovery Pass which can be also used on Siem Reap and Laos Airlines. You have to buy a minimum of three sections at $107 for each international flights and $67-77 for domestic (including taxes/fuel surcharges but not airport tax). So from HH to SR it would be $107 plus the airport tax of 120HH$.

A good travel agent in your home town should be able to help you also.

The Hong Kong-based www.tiglion.com shows the Siem Reap Airways flight HKG-REP. About HK$2,300 roundtrip. No instant booking, but you can contact them via a form or email or phone.
