budgeting for 2 week trip in Beijing, Hong Kong, Guilin, and Chongqing
I am trying to help my son budget for his first trip overseas to visit a friend in Chongqing. He is leaving June 1 and returning June 16. He is planning to stay in hostels and do this trip as cheaply as possible. What kind of budget is reasonable and how much should he have in reserve for emergencies? His friend tells him how cheap the food and transportation is there, but we have no frame of reference. He wants to arrive in Beijing, travel to Guilin, then Chongqing due to the friend's work schedule and then leave from Hong Kong. Is this too much for a 15 day time frame?

I'm not following this. Does it mean that his friend is just saying, 'It's cheap,' without being specific as to prices? Ask for exact prices. But you can easily fill yourself up for ¥10 on dumplings and noodle dishes, for instance. A meat dish, a vegetable dish, and rice can be had for a total of ¥30 to ¥50 and fill two people.
A dorm bed in Chongqing should be available for ¥30 or so. Look at the IYH site for some sample prices.
There's no problem doing the itinerary suggested in the time available, although I'd skip Guilin.

Thank you for your response. We did get clarification on the prices; that helps in figuring a basic budget. He will be checking out the dorm beds as well; although a couple nights will be spent on the train. The scale of the country is mindboggling, to say the least!
