BKK - Various ???

Again, I need your help with the following:

1- Tipping in BKK? What % is expected? Do you tip everywhere like in the US (rest., taxis, etc.)
2-Where can I buy Chanel and designer cosmetics and if the prices are a good bargain compared to the US?
3-Where to find Kerastase (hair products) and idea of prices?
4-Where can I get that Nancy Chandler map?
5-Do hotel rooms have a safe? Do you leave your $$ at the hotel or take it always with you?
6- Do you need to have plenty of change in small bills like in Siem Reap
6-Paying with cash vs. credit card? What's better?
7-Earrings: is it safe to wear avrg. size diamond studs?

1. Tipping...this is what we are comfortable with and do...others may have a different system that works for them. What you do depends on you and what you are comfortable with.
in taxis we round the fare up to the nearest 10 or 20 baht...whichever is most convenient.
Restaurants...high end 10% service is included. If the service is really, really great, we'll round up there, Other restaurants where it isn't included, we'll round the bill up to tip about 10%.
Hotels...high end, we tip the bell hop and concierge if we use them. Other hotels...we don't tip.
2. Big department stores carry a wide variety of cosmetics, as do the duty free shops. Don't know if it's a bargain to buy this sort of thing in BKK.
4. Nancy Chandler map is available in the airport, in many hotel gift shops, and most book shops. You shouldn't have any trouble finidng it. You can also buy it from nancychandler.com
5. Depends on your hotel. We leave our passports and traveller's checks/extra cash/extra credit cards/medications in the safe whenever we travel. If there is no in-room safe, many places will have a lock box at the front desk for your use.
6. We tend to carry a variety of bills in baht...20s, 50s and 100s mostly, but 500s and 1000s don't bother us, and we had no trouble using them even for smallish purchases that required change.
7. Cash versus credit card...depends on you and your card company. Some companies, like Citibank, charge a fee for each overseas transaction...I believe Citibank is 3%. Cash...you may not be comfortable carrying lots of it. We use a combination of cash, traveller's checks and credit cards. I have a couple of cards that have no foreign exchange charge that I use to charge hotel stays. We carry traveller's checks for the bulk of our cash and exchange them as needed. We use cash for restaurants and shopping. Many small shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards, but shopping malls and such do.
7. Earrings...I wouldn't imagine earrings being a problem.
8. Wat Po www.watpomassage.com

Odds and ends of answers:

1. Tipping is not expected in the way it is in the US. Large hotels and restaurants ad an automatic 10% service charge. If no service charge is added at a reatuarant, I'll add maybe 10% depending on the situation. I round up cab fares.

2-3. Costetics are not a deal. I don't know about Chanel specifically, but in general, foreign cosmetics and hair products are more expensive than in the US.

4. The Nancy Chandler Map is carried by bookstores and by newstands in hotels. It's easy to find and much cheaper than in the US.

5. Most hotel rooms have safes.

5. You will not use US cash to buy things in Thailand. You'll use Thai baht. Get it from an ATM or an exchange window when you arrive. There are ATMs all over Bangkok.

6. Cash vs. credit card is your choice. For small purchases I pay cash, just like I would anywhere else. For large purchases, hotel bills, more expensive restaurants, I use a credit card. It's really up to you.

7. Yes, it is safe to wear average size (whatever that is) diamond studs. In terms of those kinds of crimes, Bangkok is much safer than any large US city.

8. The adress to the massage school? I can only assume you mean Wat Po. It's next to the Grand Palace complex.

Chanel cosmetics are a bargain at the duty free shop at the airport. I always get my supply when traveling to Asia.
