Best City to Visit in India in 2026?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to India in 2026 and feeling a bit confused about which city to choose. There are so many options, and every place looks unique in its own way.

I’ve heard about Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi, but I’m not sure which one gives the best overall experience. I’m more interested in real culture, local food, and places that feel alive rather than just tourist attractions.

If you had to recommend just one city for 2026, what would it be and why?

Also, are there any underrated places worth considering?

Would really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks 🙏

It depends on your interests. How much time for your trip and why just one location? None of those cities are just "tourist attractions" but are places where people live and work, some for their entire lives. None of these places are Disneyland.

I found Varanasi to be the most intense, culturally fascinating location but Delihi and Jaipur were also interesting to visit. Varanasi gets many visitors (Indian and non-Indian) as it is a holy place of pilgrimage. I would only visit there if you are comfortable with crowds and death rituals. All three, of course, have real culture and local food. Delhi and Jaipur are both large cities. We did encounter considerable air pollution when in New Delhi which is something to consider, particularly if you have any breathing issues, depending on the time of year you plan to travel.

I just got back from a 25 day trip to India and it is really difficult to pick just one place. As KTravel says, it really depends on your interests. I also found Varanasi to be very intense and would not choose it as the one place to go, even though I am glad I did. Jaipur was a favorite, wonderful sites and buildings, great bazaar and food. But Agra cannot be counted out as the Taj Mahal is beauty beyond words.

Excellent advice above.
One city? I dunno, but a smaller town can often satisfy travelers just as well. Maybe check out Bundi and Jaiselmer.
Manageable, exotic and fascinating by any measure, day and night.
I am done. The ras malai
