Beijing Hotels

Looking for feedback on two Beijing hotels. The Shangri-La Hotel which is in the western part of the city (is this too far and inconvenient to stay at?) and the Palace Hotel. I've read that it is not necessary to stay right in the city center. Any first hand advice is appreciated.

We stayed at the Palace last year and were not too terribly impressed. The room was nice, but we expected that . The service wasn't all that great, but we expected it to be. We considered the Shangri-La for an upcoming trip that has now been postponed. It's out of the center loops, but it's near a subway stop that takes you directly into the center. Hope this helps.

I stayed at the China World Hotel (which is also a Shangri-La hotel located in Beijing). It had very nice rooms and decent service. Had a nice lounge on the main floor as well. Was nest to a shopping center and well-located. Check it out at:
http://www.shangri-la.com/eng/hotel/3/

I think I paid USD150 a night.

john

Hello,

I've stayed at several hotels (12+) in Beijing, including the Palace and China World. The Shangri-La is one of the first "western" hotels in Beijing, and basically is now a 3-4 star hotel. The Palace is quite good as is the China World. There are others that are also good, well located and inexpensive. Depends on what you are looking for.

Cheers,

Michael

Gretel,
We stayed at the St. Regis and enjoyed the hotel and service very much. Their Chinese restaurant was wonderful.
Thanks to all for the input. The tour package we are taking gives us the choice of either the Shangri-la or the Palace. Just wondering if one or the other is in a more convenient location.
Gretel

We stayed at the Palace last year and found no fault with it. We liked the location for it seemed to be central and we walked around and found it was safe and easy to do sightseeing from.

Gretel,

The Palace is much more central than the Shangri-La. You can easily walk to Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, etc. from the Palace.
