Bangkok/Thailand attire for women
Hello. I will be going to Thailand/BKK for just a few days after a few weeks in India. Will my Indian attire be acceptable in BKK? (I am caucasian) I hope/plan to eat at one of those very lovely and expensive restaurants mentioned elsewhere here -- will black pants and shirt (dressed up nicely) be accepted? I am trying to travel with only a carry-on or at most a 25"
I'm middle-aged. Will a one-piece swimsuit be acceptable and, if not, what is worn please?
Many thanks.

just returned from Thailand and although all the books tell you to cover up becuase they are Buddhist etc I found that if you are in a tourist area no one listens to that anyhow. We were in Phi Phi/ Krabi and Phuket and the women , old and young, slim and not slim wore skimpy bathingsuits. A one piece will be just fine.

For a beach area like Phi Phi and Phuket nobody dresses up anyway unless going to a fine restaurant. But don't take that casual attitude if you are visiting palaces, major wats and government buildings in Bangkok or the other major cities. The local might not say anything but they will not like it!

lol, we are talking about different things.
Yes, beach attire is fine in all of the international beach resort areas in Thailand. Thais do ask that you not sunbathe topless, but they are accepting of western beach attire.
But don't confuse what is aceptable at the beach with what is acceptable in Bangkok or what is acceptable for visiting wats. Thais are very polite, and you are unlikely to be confronted about inappropriate attire except at wats and at fancy restaurants.
Also, don't confuse what you may see clueless tourists wearing with what is culturally sensitive and appropriate. You really don't want to emulate the oblivious young European women with bared midriffs and short shorts you occasionally see on the skytrain.

lol. I'm looking out my window at Central World in Bangkok right now. I think Kathie has been visiting the other Bangkok. Anything goes.
Like everywhere, good taste is good taste.
You can certainly tell a tourist though. We are the lumpy giants, the overweight, droopy ones dressed badly, usually with a petite Thai lass - or lad - trailing along behind them. We, as a breed, just look gross in comparison to the Thais - simply awful.
I've always found a floral muu-muu and elegant high heels work for me. Thais love a shoe. I like camo capri pants, a flourescent strapless top and thongs for day wear - and for those special occasions, nothing beats a pink ballgown. I had one knocked up by my tailor for dinner with Hanuman and kuranosuke the other night. They were very impressed. Admittedly, they did make me sit outside, at a separate table.
