Beijing to Shanghai Train

Hi, I am flying to Beijing and looking at getting a soft sleeper train(2 birth) cabin to Shanghai, can you tell me if this is possible and if so how expensive it is. Also should I wait until I am in Beijing before I book it or should I book it before I arrive.

Thanks
Graeme

Hi

My wife and I went to China in March this year and we went from Beijing to Xi'an by train. We booked our tickets through our hotel when we were there and it cost about 400 RMB pr. person for a soft sleeper. And the train ride from Beijing to Xi'an took about 14 hours and I guess it will be something similar when going from Beijing to Shanghai. I have posted more details in my trip report which is posted on my homepage www.gardkarlsen.com...together with lots of pictures from the trip of course I hope that it can be of some help to you.

Regards

I believe there's a new category of soft sleeper that's only used on the Beijing-Shanghai and possibly Hong Kong routes. It's a 2 berth compartment with private facilities, but I haven't taken it and have no what the cost is.

We did this 2 years ago with our 2 teenage daughters. Great fun. Buy your tickets at the hotel. Getting on board was a scene (we had done lots of shopping in Beijing), but everyone was helpful. Taxis can't go up to the trains. Few foreigners travel this way, and English is pretty limited. Luckily, my husband speaks Chinese. They bring you food; an urn of tea is in each compartment. It was clean, and a new experience for all of us. You leave one China and arrive in another China.
