Traffic in Hanoi is kinda scary at first but you'll get use to it. All you need is to be careful. I and my boy friend had a really nice day with scooter.
Or may be I was just lucky? I didn't see any accident.

"All you need is to be careful." No. What you really need is for everyone else to be careful as well - not going to happen!

Glad you had a nice day out but yes, you were lucky.

I recommend the ceramic village Bat Trang- about 30 minutes from my hotel (Intercontinental Westlake), so not sure how long it would be from the Old Quarter (where I recommend you stay! The Intercon was LOVELY but you couldn't walk anywhere)

I stayed at the Hotel Metropole. It was stunning.

Get up early, like 4.30 am and go and visit Hoam Kiem Lake. It was so fun watching all the locals do their exercise. ANYTHING that moves body parts constitutes exercise so you'll see dancing, marching on the spot and all other strange things including just waving your arms in the air. I loved the big long line of 60 plus aged women slapping each other on the back, turning around then repeating it on the person facing the other way!

I did a "Food on Foot" tour with Vietnam Awesome Travel. They were in fact awesome. We went on this on day 1 and worked out where to eat and how to get around. It was fabulous.

Do not hire a scooter or anything with wheels!!

We stayed in Hanoi and HaLong Bay for a week, and had a great time. You can read our trip report here...

Plenty to do and see, plenty to enjoy there. But no, you couldn't make me drive a motor vehicle there. Not even at gunpoint.
