What research have you done? Do you have any guidebooks or ideas where you want to visit?
10 days is a short trip and you won't see nearly all the 'high spots' so maybe work out a basic plan and then Fodorites can help you improve/refine it.

We will arrive in Tokyo, being met by a friend who lives there. Maybe a night there, then taking the train to Fukui where she lives. We would want to spend a couple of days there, then head to Kyoto. Suggestions of time to be in kyoto and any other stops on way back to Tokyo?

Depending on whether you and your tweens have a fast-paced, pack a lot in kind of travelling style, or a slow and relaxed one... I'd say at least 5 nights for Kyoto, which has a tonne to see and do, not only within the city, but in nearby places too.
Do you / the kids have any particular interests, which would help people to give you specific suggestions that fit?
Have you / they already been to Tokyo, or is there any other reason why you'd only give it a single night? Tokyo has a lot to see too and my understanding is that there is much to appeal to the age group of your kids.
If you have only 10 nights, and are spending two with your friend in Fukui, I would probably suggest 5 for Kyoto, 3 for Tokyo and 2 for Fukui, but that's based on zero knowledge of your family's travel style, interests and budget.
