How long to clear Customs and Immigration at EWR?

I'm flying from Edinburgh to Newark this September, arriving at 3:00pm ET on CO 109. I want to catch the Southbound Amtrak at 4:28pm that day - Will I have enough time to catch it? The next train is a couple of hours later. When I fly in on the 11:45am flight it's never a problem getting to the Amtrak station within the hour, but I think that's because there are fewer international arrivals at that time.

It all depends, is it a holiday week?

I've cleared in as short as 30 minutes including picking up luggage, to an hour with checked luggage pickup. If you are not checking luggage, 45 min to clear if multiple flights are arriving will be plenty of time. BTW, I find more flights come in earlier rather than later at EWR.

When we arrived EWR from LHR last week about 3:00 PM we breezed through immigration and waited only a brief time for checked bags, but on other occasions it has been a longer wait. It appears they have installed additional desks in the immigration area but on a portion were staffed. 1:48 is theoretically doable but may be a bit tight - a delay is always possible, there's the long walk from jetway to immigration and you will need to ride the airport tram to the airport train station. If you have no checked bags or are elite and get priority handling that would help. I'd try and hope to make it but not schedule anything important based on that chance.

Thanks, for that. I might just book the train tix and hope I can make it. I'm travelling alone so may be able to pull it off.
